Leonardo DiCaprio Declares War on AI Art: 'Lacks Humanity,' Says Hollywood Icon

Prominent figures in Hollywood are voicing significant doubts and strong opposition regarding the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry. Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, named Time magazine's entertainer of the year, expressed his skepticism about AI taking over Hollywood. While he acknowledges the potential for job displacement, stating he "mourns the fact that talented and experienced people could lose their jobs," DiCaprio firmly believes that AI is inherently incapable of possessing humanity, thus preventing it from creating what can be "authentically" considered art.

DiCaprio elaborated on his perspective, suggesting that AI could serve as an "enhancement tool for a young filmmaker to do something we’ve never seen before." However, he maintains that genuine art must originate from human beings. He illustrated this point by comparing AI-generated mashup songs, despite their brilliance, to "internet junk" that lacks "anchoring" or "humanity," fading into the ether after a brief moment of fame. For him, the absence of human essence means AI-generated content cannot achieve lasting artistic significance.

Other esteemed filmmakers have also taken a strong stand against AI. Guillermo del Toro made headlines at the Gotham Awards by explicitly stating, “fuck AI.” Speaking to NPR a month prior, the Oscar-winning director declared he would rather die than use AI in his movies, emphasizing his complete lack of interest in generative AI for his work. "I’m 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak," del Toro asserted, highlighting his unwavering conviction.

James Cameron, known for his groundbreaking "Avatar" sequels, also revealed that he has banned the use of generative AI in his productions. Cameron's rationale stems from a commitment to human talent, stating, "We honor and celebrate actors. We don’t replace actors." This position underscores a broader sentiment within the industry to protect human roles and creative contributions.

Adding to the chorus of concern, Oscar-winning screenwriter and actress Emma Thompson shared her "intense irritation" regarding the "coming AI revolution" in Hollywood during an appearance on "The Late Show." Thompson expressed particular frustration with AI chatbots that offer to rewrite her work. She explained her preference for writing longhand on a pad, believing in a vital connection "between the brain and the hand." When her work, once digitized, is met with AI suggestions to rewrite it, her exasperation is palpable, humorously recounting her instinct to tell the AI to "fuck off!"

Collectively, these leading Hollywood figures articulate a shared anxiety regarding AI's potential to diminish the human element in art, replace skilled professionals, and fundamentally alter the creative process. Their strong and varied objections highlight a significant debate within the entertainment industry about the ethical, artistic, and practical implications of advanced artificial intelligence.
