Legends Unite: Springsteen, Waits & More Honor Shane MacGowan with '20th Century Paddy' Tribute!

A new all-star music project, "20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan," was officially announced on March 12, celebrating the enduring legacy of the late singer, songwriter, and frontman of The Pogues. This tribute album gathers a remarkable roster of artists, including Damien Dempsey, David Gray, Dropkick Murphys, Hozier, Johnny Depp, Tom Waits, and Bruce Springsteen, to honor MacGowan's profound impact on music and culture.
The album's first single is a reimagined version of "A Rainy Night in Soho" by none other than Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen profoundly reflected on MacGowan's essence, stating, "Shane was all naked bottomless humanity. Threatening to force us to ask ourselves if we were living deeply, authentically. He was raw, hilarious, no apologies and profound. His soul was filled with the transgressive and ecstatic properties of the saints." This single is now available on streaming platforms, offering a poignant first taste of the forthcoming collection.
Shane MacGowan passed away on November 30, 2023, at the age of 65, following a period of ill health. He left behind a rich treasury of songs, with lyrics that bravely invited listeners into a gritty, unvarnished world, far from the glare of the spotlight. His work masterfully articulated the challenging lives of working-class Irish immigrants, often finding love and hope amidst the harsh realities of a "dirty old town."
Born on Christmas Day in 1957 in Kent, England, to Irish parents, MacGowan emerged as a significant force in London's burgeoning punk scene. In the early 1980s, he went on to form The Pogues, a band that boldly fused Celtic, folk, and punk influences. During an era dominated by New Wave, synth-pop, and extravagant hairstyles, The Pogues quickly cultivated a reputation for their high-energy, often booze-soaked, and fiercely authentic live performances.
MacGowan's exceptional gift for poetic songwriting and his considerable influence on his musical contemporaries were formally recognized in 2018 when he received the prestigious Ivors Inspiration Award at the Ivor Novello Awards. It was perhaps a fitting coincidence that MacGowan's passing occurred in the weeks leading up to Christmas, the very season when The Pogues' beloved 1987 holiday classic, "Fairytale of New York," enters heavy rotation, particularly in the U.K. and Ireland. Despite never reaching the top of the U.K. chart (where it peaked at No. 2), the song consistently makes its annual march into the top 10 every December, solidifying its status as an iconic festive anthem.
Integral to the realization of the "20th Century Paddy" project was MacGowan's longtime partner, Irish journalist Victoria Mary Clarke. She expressed her sentiments in a statement, remarking, "Shane’s spirit and songwriting are eternally exalted through this glorious collection, each song is uniquely and graciously interpreted by these beyond beautiful artists and his family are humbled by and thankful to each and every one of the musicians involved, to the delightful team at Rubyworks, and to John Kennedy without whom this would not have happened."
Niall Muckian, founder of Rubyworks, further emphasized MacGowan's monumental impact, stating, "As a songwriter, Shane redefined the landscape for generations of artists; it is a privilege to provide a home for this work and ensure his poetic voice continues to reach audiences around the world." The album is scheduled for release on November 13 through Rubyworks and is currently available for pre-order. A special limited edition "Deluxe Bookpack" is also offered, featuring 3LPs, 2CDs, and a 56-page book filled with memorabilia and liner notes.
In a testament to MacGowan's well-known compassion, 50% of the artist royalties from the album's release will be generously donated to the Dublin Simon Community. This charitable contribution aims to provide life-saving housing and healthcare for individuals experiencing homelessness. Catherine Kenny, CEO of Dublin Simon Community, highlighted MacGowan's consistent empathy: "Shane’s empathy for people sleeping rough in Dublin was well known. He never hesitated to stop, acknowledge, and share a moment with someone on the street."
MacGowan was a long-time supporter of the charity, and his performance at the Christmas Eve Busk in 2021 marked his last live appearance. Since then, at every subsequent Busk, one of his songs has been played in tribute, a tradition that continues to honor his memory. Representatives for the project have noted that "20th Century Paddy" is an album MacGowan had always expressed a desire to create himself, making its realization a deeply meaningful tribute. While Springsteen's "A Rainy Night in Soho" is available, other artists contributing to the album will be announced in due course.
The extensive list of artists involved in this tribute includes: Amble, Bruce Springsteen, Camille O’Sullivan, Cronin, Damien Dempsey, David Gray, Dropkick Murphys, Garron Noone, Glen Hansard, Hozier & Jessie Buckley, Johnny Depp & Imelda May, Johnny Mac and The Faithful, Kate Moss, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Lisa Moorish & Another Day, Lisa O’Neill, LYRA, Madra Salach, Moya Brennan, Mundy, Picture This, Pinch of Snuff, Primal Scream, Steve Earle, The High Kings, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Libertines, The Murder Capital, The Pogues, and Tom Waits.
