Massive Oil Heist Busted: Navy Seizes Vessel, 12 Suspects in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Navy has successfully intercepted the vessel MT FILIA and its 12 crew members, based on strong intelligence gathered from its surveillance systems and continuous monitoring under Operation Delta Sentinel. The interception occurred on Thursday, July 23, 2026, due to the vessel's alleged involvement in siphoning stolen crude oil from an oil well situated at the Utue Terminal in Akwa Ibom State.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Navy revealed that the MT FILIA was transporting approximately 32.82 metric tonnes of fuel oil and 650 metric tonnes of crude oil. Critically, the vessel lacked the necessary documentation and lawful authorization for carrying such cargo. Consequently, the vessel, its entire crew, and the recovered illicit cargo have been taken into custody to facilitate further investigation and potential prosecution in strict adherence to existing laws.

This significant achievement aligns with the broader successes of Operation Delta Sentinel, an ongoing Nigerian Navy initiative dedicated to combating crude oil theft and associated economic sabotage. Director of Naval Information, Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, highlighted the impressive operational successes achieved between April and June 2026. During this period, the Navy recovered over 4.7 million litres of petroleum products, dismantled more than 58 illegal refining sites, destroyed over 239 dugout pits and 13 refining ovens, and apprehended more than 91 suspects linked to crude oil theft.

The positive impact of these operations is evident in the national crude oil production figures, which surged to 1.89 million barrels per day in July 2026, successfully surpassing Nigeria's OPEC production quota. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, lauded the professionalism, vigilance, and unwavering commitment displayed by the personnel involved in the MT FILIA operation, underscoring the Navy's dedication.

Vice Admiral Abbas reiterated the Nigerian Navy's unwavering resolve to eradicate crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and all other forms of maritime criminality that actively undermine Nigeria's economic prosperity and national security. He emphasized that Operation Delta Sentinel continues to yield measurable operational successes through its consistent surveillance, intelligence-driven operations, and strong collaboration with other security agencies and critical stakeholders across the maritime sector. The Chief of Naval Staff further affirmed the Service's commitment to supporting national efforts aimed at boosting crude oil production, safeguarding vital oil and gas infrastructure, and maintaining a secure maritime environment conducive to sustained economic growth. He urged the public to provide credible information to assist the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies in their ongoing fight against crude oil theft and other maritime crimes.
