Legendary Farewell: Elton John Ends Historic Touring Career with Mexico City Concerts
British pop legend Elton John is set for his ultimate "one last lap," announcing two final shows in Mexico City on October 2 and 3 at Estadio Banorte. These concerts fulfill a long-standing promise to fans after pandemic-related postponements, marking the definitive end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road journey and celebrating his enduring connection with the city.
Three years after the official conclusion of his monumental Farewell Yellow Brick Road world tour, British pop icon Elton John is set to embark on "one last lap" with two deeply significant shows in Mexico City. The legendary "Rocket Man" has announced performances at Estadio Banorte on October 2 and 3, marking what is truly the ultimate end to his multi-year farewell trek.
These highly anticipated Mexico shows are presented by AEG Presents, Cardenas Marketing Network, and Enso Music. A statement released by the organizers describes these events as "a heartfelt celebration honoring both the artist and a city that has held onto the memory and celebrated his music for years," underscoring the profound connection Elton John has with his Mexican fanbase.
This return to Mexico City is particularly poignant, as it has been 34 years since Elton John first graced a Mexican stage for two shows at the Azteca Stadium as part of "The One" tour. His most recent appearance in the capital was 12 years ago, when he performed a pair of "Elton & Ray Cooper" dates at Auditorio Nacional in 2012. The Farewell Yellow Brick Road jaunt originally wrapped on Saturday, July 8, 2023, after nearly five years on the road. The tour was a colossal success, reportedly grossing an astounding $939.1 million and selling 6 million tickets, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore.
During its initial run, the global pandemic significantly impacted touring plans, leading to postponements and cancellations. Elton John himself also missed a number of dates due to various injuries and illnesses. His decision to return to Mexico is described as a promise kept, particularly for those postponed Latin American shows. "Mexico City has always held a special place in my heart," Elton John commented in a statement. "I was truly disappointed that the pandemic kept me from touring Latin America during my Farewell tour which makes this return especially meaningful. I’m thrilled to finally share this very special moment with my fans after all these years.”
Elton John initially announced his impending retirement from touring with the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour in January 2018, commencing the journey in September of the same year. He had initially envisioned it as a three-year goodbye, and despite the global shutdown caused by COVID-19 extending the timeline by two years, he diligently adhered to his commitment. While these Mexico City dates represent the definitive conclusion of his touring career, John has consistently maintained that he does not intend to tour again, though he hasn't entirely ruled out the possibility of playing sporadic one-off events in the future. General on-sale for tickets is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 16, at 12 pm local time in Mexico City.
