Alfredos Nii Anyetei was unanimously confirmed as the MCE of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LADMA), while Dr Michael Mensah received 16 “Yes” votes out of 19 to be confirmed as the MCE for Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly in a smooth election. 

At the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly, where the President had renominated Rudolph Collingwoode-Williams for the position of MCE, the confirmation exercise was disrupted as some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) thronged the venue in protest of the President’s choice.

The rampaging protesters, who demanded the nomination of the NDC Constituency Chairman for Ayawaso Central, Harry Otu, as the MCE nominee, dismantled canopies, chairs and the voting booth set up for the event, compelling the Electoral Commission Officers to flee for their lives.

The exercise did not take off at all as the situation compelled the postponement of the renomination.

An attempt by the police to restoreoredr was fiercely resisted by the ramping youth.

In the first election for La Dade Kotopon, Mr Anyetei received five “Yes” votes out of the 14 assembly members of LADMA who voted for his confirmation, while nine voted "No".

For Ayawaso West, Dr Mensah polled nine votes, representing 47 per cent of the vote, out of 19 eligible voters made up of six government appointees and 13 elected assembly members, while 10, representing 53 per cent, voted “No” in the election.

Following the rejections, President John Dramani Mahama re-nominated them following their initial failure to garner the required votes at their respective approval meetings.

The re-nomination was announced in a statement signed and issued by the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, last Thursday, May 15, 2025.

It said the President’s action was in line with Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended.
