30 arrested in joint task force operation at East Legon construction site

At least 30 individuals, including some Arab nationals, have been arrested in a joint task force operation led by the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly at a construction site on McDan Drive in East Legon.

The operation, which involved personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, the military, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, targeted an illegally constructed structure reportedly intended to be used as a mosque.

However, the authorities say the project lacked the necessary legal permits.

Speaking to the media after the raid on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ayawaso West, Dr. Michael Mensah, explained that despite several directives for the construction to be halted, it proved futile, making the operation necessary

He issued a stern warning to other individuals or groups engaged in similar activities, urging them to regularize their operations within two months or risk facing similar enforcement action.

“We have been here several times, and asked them to stop, but they refused. We were here last week and even wrote on the walls, but they keep turning our people away. So, we are here and sounding a warning to everybody within the municipality that if you have such a fraudulent permit, come to the municipal assembly and then regularise it.

“We have several such permits that were issued by the AMA; there are several buildings without permits. So we are asking them to come within two months to regularise their permit,” he said.
