Labour Party Crisis Deepens: Factional Secretary Represents Party at INEC Amidst Key Absence!

The protracted leadership dispute within the Labour Party (LP) has once again come to the forefront following the notable appearance of Julius Abure, the embattled factional National Chairman, and Umar Farouk Ibrahim, a factional National Secretary of the party, at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday. Their presence at the quarterly consultative meeting between INEC and leaders of registered political parties has significantly reignited simmering tensions within the opposition party.
Photographs confirming their attendance at the crucial engagement were disseminated by Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Abure-led faction. Ifoh emphatically described Abure and Ibrahim as the “legitimate representatives” of the Labour Party at the discussions, a claim that underscores the ongoing power struggle.
The INEC meeting itself serves as a standard interface, facilitating dialogue between the electoral commission and the leadership of various political parties. This platform is typically utilized for comprehensive discussions pertaining to electoral reforms, the promotion of internal party democracy, and meticulous preparations for upcoming elections. However, the unexpected attendance of the Abure-led faction has inevitably prompted questions regarding the electoral body’s current official recognition status of the rival groups vying for control of the Labour Party.
It remained unclear immediately whether the opposing faction, led by Senator Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, which emerged from a distinct parallel convention and constituted an Interim National Committee, had also received an invitation or was present at the meeting. As previously reported by LEADERSHIP, the Labour Party has been deeply entrenched in a prolonged and intricate leadership crisis. This crisis has been characterized by numerous conflicting court rulings and the staging of parallel conventions, each resulting in the formation of rival factions, all vigorously asserting their legitimacy over the party’s leadership.
