Knicks Plagued by Injuries and Long Layoff Woes Ahead of NBA Finals Showdown
The New York Knicks, fresh off a dominant sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, are preparing for the NBA Finals, but not without facing significant challenges. A critical setback has emerged with the news that center Mitchell Robinson has suffered a broken right pinkie, an injury that casts uncertainty over his immediate return. While the team has not commented on the specifics of when or how the injury occurred, it presents a roadblock for a team that had otherwise appeared to be at full strength as they awaited the start of the Finals. Robinson, a crucial defensive presence and rebounder, has been a key factor throughout the playoffs, averaging 5.5 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game. His shooting hand injury might not be as detrimental for his offensive game, as he rarely shoots outside of arm's reach, but his struggles at the free-throw line (13-for-43 in the postseason, including 2-for-14 in the Eastern Conference Finals) could be further exacerbated.
Adding to the complexity of their preparation is a substantial nine-day layoff between the Eastern Conference Finals and the NBA Finals. This extended break, coming after they clinched their first Eastern Conference title since 1999, has prompted the team to reflect on lessons learned from a similar layoff earlier in the postseason. Prior to their Eastern Conference Finals matchup against the Cavaliers, the Knicks experienced a long break which led to a slow start in Game 1, where they trailed by 22 points before mounting a stunning overtime comeback victory. Players and coaching staff are keenly aware that a similar lapse against either the Spurs or Thunder, their potential opponents in the NBA Finals, would be far less forgiving.
Knicks guard Jalen Brunson emphasized the importance of mental and physical readiness. "I think, obviously, just being more ready to go by the time Game 1 hits," Brunson stated after a recent practice, comparing their current situation to the previous layoff. "Comparing our situation from last time, just being mentally and physically locked in. I think that’s really important for us and that’s what we have to focus on these next couple of days." Teammate Mikal Bridges echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for mental preparation. Coach Mike Brown, drawing on his experience with long playoff layoffs during his time as an assistant with Golden State, is working with his staff and players to maintain a competitive edge. He understands the difficulty of replicating a Game 1 competitive environment in practice and is exploring various strategies to keep the team sharp without overdoing scrimmages that could lead to injury or fatigue.
Brown noted, "You can only have so many scrimmages because there’s only so many days, and you got to make sure that — knock on wood — you give them time to recover from the scrimmages. So it can’t be about much more increased contact." Despite the unknown opponent from the Western Conference Finals, which saw the Spurs force a Game 7 against the Thunder, the Knicks maintain confidence in their own capabilities. Forward Karl-Anthony Towns acknowledged the potential for rust but expressed the team's commitment to better preparation this time around. The focus remains on execution, desperation, and bringing high energy into Game 1. The Knicks, described as a veteran and resilient group, are determined to grow quickly from past adversity and ensure they are fully prepared for the ultimate challenge of the NBA Finals, despite the new injury concern and the extended break.
