Kenneth Branagh Eyes 'Thor' Return: Director Expresses Desire for More Marvel Adventures

Kenneth Branagh, the acclaimed director behind the 2011 Marvel blockbuster “Thor,” has expressed a keen interest in potentially returning to the superhero genre. Speaking to Business Insider, Branagh revealed a desire to conclude his journey with the character, stating, “Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character.” He elaborated on having ideas for future installments, drawing parallels to James Mangold’s critically lauded “Logan,” and expressed a vision for Chris Hemsworth and other cast members to have their own distinct, definitive final stories, guiding “Thor” into a “glorious twilight.”

Despite his current openness, Branagh clarified why he chose not to direct the subsequent “Thor” films. He explained that while he was asked to return, he was “definitely ready for another” project, but not immediately after the first film. Branagh characterized Marvel productions as intensely demanding, remarking, “Marvel shoots are intense. Marvel postproduction is more intense — wildly exciting but super intense.” He emphasized his personal need for a break after the rigorous schedule, stating, “I definitely needed to smell the roses. Kevin Feige was very understanding, and so was the cast. I needed a break.”

Following Branagh’s departure, Alan Taylor helmed “Thor: The Dark World” in 2013, with Taika Waititi later taking the reins for “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017 and “Thor: Love and Thunder” in 2022. Branagh, known for directing films like “Belfast,” reflected on watching these sequels with “a mix of tremendous pride and amazement at the many ways such stories can go.” He reiterated his sentiment about the characters, noting that it “would be something very beautiful to take those characters into their own particular sunset,” when questioned about a potential return to the franchise.

However, Branagh acknowledged the complex realities of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s expansive narrative. He concluded his thoughts by conceding, “They are so far deep into the future of the Marvel Universe that I’m sure whatever plans they have for it are already kind of set.” Despite this, his underlying belief persists that “there’s something beautiful to be had out of arriving at a conclusion for that arc of those stories with those characters and those actors.”
