Kehlani's 'Folded' Dominates Charts: First Hot R&B/Hip-Hop #1, Lands Top 10 on Hot 100!

Kehlani has achieved a significant career milestone with their R&B hit “Folded,” which soared to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated November 8. This marks their first entry into the top 10 of the all-genre songs tally, a moment the artist celebrated on Instagram on November 3, expressing endless gratitude before a performance of the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that same night.

The success of “Folded” extends across multiple Billboard charts, making it Kehlani’s first No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs lists. On the chart dated November 8, “Folded” advanced to the summit of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart after spending five weeks in the runner-up position. It also claimed the top spot on the Hot R&B Songs list, dethroning Leon Thomas’ “Mutt” on both rankings. This marks Kehlani’s first No. 1 on these R&B-specific charts, having previously reached No. 4 with “Nights Like This” (featuring Ty Dolla $ign) in 2019 and “Can I” (assisted by Tory Lanez) in 2020.

The coronation week for “Folded” on the multi-metric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart was propelled by impressive gains in its tracking week of October 24-30, according to Luminate. The song garnered 13 million streams (a 35% increase), 32.9 million in airplay audience (an 11% increase), and sold 3,000 units in the United States (a 74% increase). These substantial improvements in streaming and sales were significantly boosted by the release of the six-song “Homage Pack” last month, which featured remixes of “Folded” with various R&B artists.

The “Homage Pack” includes individual remixes with Brandy, Toni Braxton, JoJo, Mario, Ne-Yo, and Tank. The first five versions combine with the original “Folded” for charting and data purposes, while the Tank edition, which recasts Kehlani’s vocals in a less prominent way, is tracked separately. Given that the original “Folded” contributed the majority of the chart activity, no featured artists were added to the song’s billing.

Beyond the Hot 100 and R&B charts, “Folded” also achieved its first top 10 visits on both the Streaming Songs chart, where it moved from No. 28 to No. 10, and the Radio Songs chart, climbing from No. 11 to No. 8. This marks a comprehensive breakthrough for the single.

Prior to this success, Kehlani’s highest-charting song on the Hot 100 was their feature on Cardi B’s “Safe,” which peaked at No. 26. This surpassed their previous collaboration with Cardi B, “Ring,” from the latter’s 2018 debut album, which peaked at No. 28. “Safe” further achieved No. 1 on Rhythmic Airplay, becoming Cardi’s tenth leader and Kehlani’s second, one month after “Folded” topped that chart for a week.
