Keane Blasts Vieira Over 'Silly' Suggestion for Carrick's Permanent Role
)
Roy Keane has unequivocally dismissed the notion of Michael Carrick being appointed as Manchester United's permanent manager, despite Carrick's impressive start in his interim role. Carrick has overseen a remarkable period during his temporary charge, securing notable victories against high-profile managers such as Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta. His most recent success was a dramatic 3-2 triumph over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, a result that significantly impacted the Gunners' title aspirations. This victory extended Carrick's perfect record to six points from two matches since he took over from Darren Fletcher.
During a fervent discussion on Sky Sports, Keane, the former United captain, made his position abundantly clear to fellow pundits Patrick Vieira and Micah Richards. He remained resolute in his conviction that the ex-midfielder is not the suitable long-term candidate for the managerial position. When queried by Richards about whether Carrick's performance justified a permanent appointment, Keane's response was characteristically direct and uncompromising.
"No, you’re being silly now," Keane retorted. He elaborated, stating, "He’s had two great performances, but anybody can win two games." Furthermore, Keane emphasized that even if Manchester United were to secure a top-four finish, it would not alter his opinion. "Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the man for the job, absolutely not. They need a bigger and better manager, but he’s got the opportunity. What a chance it is for him and you know what, he’s taken it. Fair play to him."
The pundit later reinforced his stance, asserting that even an unbeaten streak until the conclusion of the season would not sway his judgment. "I think if United win every game from now until the end of the season, I still wouldn’t be giving him the job," Keane firmly declared. He concluded, "I just think they need a bigger, more experienced manager, it’s as simple as that."
In contrast, former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira offered an alternative perspective. Vieira argued that Carrick merits a genuine opportunity, drawing parallels with other young managers who have successfully led top clubs. "I think you have young managers with no experience who deserve to have a chance," Vieira contended. He cited, "You look at Inter Milan with Cristian Chivu, who is now top of the league in Serie A. And he’s doing a good job... I think he [Carrick] deserves to have a chance at Manchester United." This debate highlights the differing philosophies on managerial appointments in top-tier football.
