Kacey Musgraves Drops Bombshell: 'Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes' is Coming!
Grammy-winning artist Kacey Musgraves announced her upcoming album, "Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes," set for release on January 15, which deepens her exploration of Texas-Mexico musical ties with new Spanish-language tracks and covers. This announcement coincides with her five nominations for the upcoming CMA Awards.
Kacey Musgraves, the acclaimed Grammy-winning artist, has announced a forthcoming album, Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes, slated for release on January 15 via Lost Highway Records. This new project follows her May album Middle of Nowhere, showcasing Musgraves' prolific creative output. Fans received an early glimpse of the new material with the release of two songs, “Weekend in Texas” and “Mi Tesoro,” on Thursday, October 22.
The highly anticipated Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes will feature a robust 16-song tracklist, comprising eleven entirely new compositions and five carefully selected covers. The album delves deeper into themes previously explored in its predecessor, such as solitude, contentment, and self-assurance. Crucially, it expands upon these motifs by thoroughly examining the intricate musical connections between Texas and Mexico, a significant evolution in Musgraves' artistic direction. This exploration is further highlighted by the inclusion of four songs performed entirely in Spanish, alongside a unique Spanish version of “Uncertain, TX,” which features the renowned Tejano/norteño group Intocable. Additionally, Musgraves pays homage to musical heritage with a cover of Freddy Fender’s iconic 1974 hit, “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”
Musgraves’ embrace of Tejano, norteño, and cumbia elements is not a novel development but rather a deepening of existing influences within her discography. Her previous album, Middle of Nowhere, already showcased these elements. Her artistic journey in this realm also includes a Spanish-language cover of the folk standard “Gracias a la Vida” from her 2021 album Star-Crossed, performances of songs by the late Tejano legend Selena Quintanilla in concert, and a collaboration with Carín León on the track “Lost In Translation.”
Beyond her upcoming musical release, Kacey Musgraves is also a prominent figure in the upcoming CMA Awards, scheduled for November 18. Airing live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on ABC and Disney+, she is a leading contender with five nominations. These include Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for Middle of Nowhere, Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year for “Dry Spell,” and Musical Event of the Year for “Horses and Divorces” with Miranda Lambert.
The full tracklist for Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes is as follows: “Pretty Horses,” “Weekend In Texas,” “Hard Conversations,” “Denim on Denim,” “Figure Out My Life,” “Caballero,” “The Vacation Song,” “(Hey Baby) Que Paso?,” “Uncertain, TX” feat. Intocable (Spanish Version), “Mi Tesoro,” “Rodeo,” “Tu Solo Tu” feat. Mariachi Oro De America (Live in Mexico City), “All My Exes” (Kacey’s Version), “Desert Eyes,” “Pity Party,” and “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”
