JUST IN: Fairfax County schools to close early Tuesday for snow
Fairfax County Public Schools is joining the growing roster of D.C.-area school systems planning to close early tomorrow (Tuesday) in anticipation of a snowstorm.
All schools and offices will close three hours early tomorrow, and morning and afternoon classes for preschool special education students have been canceled, FCPS announced.
The three-hour early dismissal includes full-day preschool special education classes as well as early childhood education and Head Start programs. All late buses and activities on school grounds have been canceled.
Families who have children enrolled in Fairfax County’s School Age Child Care (SACC) centers can still take advantage of the program’s after-school sessions, but the centers will close promptly at 6:15 p.m.
“Due to the possibility of hazardous road conditions, [the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services] administration requests families make every effort to pick up children as soon as possible,” FCPS said in its announcement.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the D.C. region that’s set to take effect at 1 p.m. tomorrow and remain in place until 7 a.m. Wednesday morning (Feb. 12). Between 4 and 8 inches of snow accumulation are being predicted, as of 2:52 p.m.
To ensure the roadway can be treated, the National Park Service will close the George Washington Memorial Parkway’s northern section in McLean at midnight. The Virginia Department of Transportation is advising people to avoid traveling during the storm, which will likely affect tomorrow’s evening rush-hour.
Get ready, NOVA! The snow coming will likely impact PM rush hour on Tuesday, and both rush hours on Wednesday. Avoid driving during the storm. Our crews are out around the clock actively brining (today) treating (tomorrow) roads to make them passable for drivers. pic.twitter.com/L94SdN3TmT
