Jonathan's Comeback? PDP Poised to Ratify Ex-President as Candidate!

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, has announced its intention to ratify the nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections. This significant development is slated to occur at a Special National Convention scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Abuja.

The official invitation to the convention, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, mnipr, and National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Dakas Shan, clearly states that the primary purpose of this high-level gathering is the formal endorsement of Jonathan’s candidacy under the banner of this specific PDP faction. Expectations are high for a substantial turnout, with party stakeholders, delegates, and members from across Nigeria anticipated to attend. This convention is being presented as a pivotal moment in the faction’s strategic preparations for the forthcoming presidential election.

The PDP leadership associated with Turaki has issued a strong call to all relevant party structures, urging them to mobilize effectively and ensure widespread participation in the convention. This emphasis underscores the faction's commitment to unity and discipline among its members as they gear up for the electoral challenge.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who held office from 2010 to 2015, is widely remembered for his historic concession speech in 2015. In that address, he peacefully transferred power to then-incoming President Muhammadu Buhari after accepting the outcome of the general election, a gesture lauded for strengthening Nigeria's democratic process.

Despite the PDP faction's move to nominate him, Jonathan has yet to issue any public statement formally accepting the nomination or confirming his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. His position remains one of cautious consideration. During a recent interaction with various youth groups at his Abuja office, Jonathan articulated that the presidential race is not a simple matter, stating, “Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely.” He reiterated this stance, emphasizing that he could not spontaneously decide to seek the presidency again. “I will consult. I cannot just wake up and say I want to be the president of Nigeria again. But I am telling you that I will consult. If there is a need to, I will wait,” he affirmed, indicating a thorough consultative process before any definitive declaration.

This development also occurs amidst other internal party dynamics, as another faction of the PDP, loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, had previously ratified Prof Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate. This highlights the ongoing complexities and multi-faceted nature of political alignments within the broader Peoples Democratic Party.
