Jambughoda pounded by eight inches of rain

Vadodara: Heavy rain lashed most parts of the city and the districts of central Gujarat on Friday night, leaving several low-lying areas heavily waterlogged. The rain halted on Saturday even as skies remained overcast.

In the 24 hours ended 6am on Saturday, Jambughoda in Panchmahal received the most rain in the state, 205mm. In this period, 150 talukas received rain with 72 recording up to 50mm.On Saturday, between noon and 8pm, Modasa town of Aravalli district got the most rain, 102mm.Continuous rain has led to a substantial inflows into reservoirs, with eight dams reaching 100% capacity. A high alert has been issued for villages downstream of 14 dams — four in Bhavnagar, two each in Amreli, Botad and Morbi, and three in Surendranagar.Since the onset of monsoon, 2,639 people have been shifted to safer locations, with a majority, 2,308, being in Bhavnagar district.At Pavagadh, there were reports of wet mud on the pedestrian route to the Mahakali temple making the route treacherous for devotees. In Vadodara city, steady rainfall on Friday night led to waterlogging in many parts of the old city, including MG Road, Raopura Road, Amdawadi Pol, Dandia Bazaar and Waghodiya Road.

Low-lying areas saw knee-deep water pooling. On Friday night, Vadodara city got 38mm of rain while Waghodiya taluka received 31mm.Between 6am and 6pm on Saturday, an average of 9.13mm of rain fell in the district. In neighbouring Anand district, Petlad taluka received the most rain, 43mm.Downpours forecast in north GujaratThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rains in a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls in Banaskantha and Sabarkantha districts. Heavy to very heavy rain is also predicted at isolated places in Patan, Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Dahod, Mahisagar, Narmada, Surat, Dang, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Surendranagar and in Kutch.
