Ithaca Selects Mike McSloy as Next Head Coach of Men's Basketball - D3hoops
The Ithaca College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has named Mike McSloy as the 11th head coach of the men's basketball program, as announced by Susan Bassett '79, director of athletics. McSloy will begin his appointment on June 30.
McSloy, who brings a wealth of experience at the Division III level, takes over a program that went 19-10 in 2024-25 and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship after claiming the second Liberty League title in five seasons.
"I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mike McSloy as Ithaca College's next head men's basketball coach," said Bassett. "I am confident that he is the right next leader for IC men's basketball who will build on this year's success. Mike is a winner who has an innovative approach to the game. At every step of this process, Mike stood out with professionalism, a clear commitment to student experience, and a keen understanding of the educational value of participation in sports. I am excited for the future with Mike McSloy at the helm of our men's basketball program."
McSloy most recently coached at Drew University from the Landmark Conference in Madison, N.J. since 2022. He quickly turned a 13-12 team from his first year with the program into back-to-back 20-win seasons. Most recently, the Rangers went 24-4 in 2024-25, were ranked as high as No. 16 in the country and made the NCAA Tournament. McSloy would be named Landmark and NABC District 5 Coach of the Year.
"I am honored and grateful to be named the head men's basketball coach at Ithaca College," stated McSloy. "I want to thank Susan Bassett, the search committee and everyone involved in the hiring process for trusting me to lead this historic program. It was evident from the minute I stepped on campus that Ithaca College is a special place and somewhere I wanted to be. Without the success of Coach Farid, this opportunity wouldn't be possible, and we are hoping to continue moving the program in the direction he had it going. I can't wait to get started. Go Bombers!"
The Rangers went 20-6 in 2023-24 and set school records in 3-pointers made (319) and points per game (87.0), both of which were top 10 in Division III.
Prior to his time at The Forest, McSloy served as the head coach at St. Joseph's Long Island from 2019-22, and held assistant roles at Gettysburg College (2018-19), New York University (2016-18), Vassar College (2015-16) and Connecticut College (2013-15).
In his final season at St. Joseph's, McSloy guided the Golden Eagles to a 15-9 campaign, which was the best season in seven years and included a win over No. 15 Yeshiva University.
"We are thrilled to welcome Mike McSloy to Ithaca College as our new head men's basketball coach," expressed Bouyea, the incoming Director of Athletics. "Mike brings a proven track record of competitive success, a deep commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes, and an energy that aligns perfectly with the values of Bomber Athletics. His leadership and vision will no doubt elevate our men's basketball program as we continue to build on its strong tradition of excellence. We're excited to have him on South Hill and can't wait to see the impact he'll make both on and off the court."
"It was a pleasure to work with our incoming director of intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation, Aaron Bouyea, as we considered candidates and interviewed finalists," Bassett said. "Aaron is well on his way in his transition to IC."
A Kings Park, N.Y. native, McSloy received his undergraduate degree in international trade and transportation from SUNY Maritime in 2013. In two seasons as a student-athlete at Maritime, McSloy started and played in all 50 games and averaged 16.8 points as he was a captain his senior season and named Second Team All-Skyline Conference. McSloy also played two seasons at SUNY Oswego.
A special thank you to the search committee: Sean Fitzmaurice, Dan Raymond, Mike Toerper, Karrie Moore, as well as the department interview team, men's basketball student-athletes, admissions colleagues and Margaret Shackell, NCAA FAR for their help in this process.
