Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has told off political leaders over what he termed as prophesying violence in the 2027 general elections.

According to Kindiki, any leader predicting violence is unpatriotic and a threat to the country's national security.

He went on to say that the country has been through a painful past that was as a result of political violence, insisting that the government will not allow such.

“The people who are prophesying violence and bloodshed, I want to warn and remind them that our country has gone through very painful moments in the past because of political violence and we cannot allow our country to go back there," Kindiki said.

"Utterances by leaders from any political persuasion prophesying violence, such utterances are unpatriotic and threaten the security of our nation."

He spoke at Amagoro Primary School Grounds, Teso North Constituency, Busia County, where he attended an Interdenominational Sunday Service and Worship.

The Deputy President assured Kenyans that the elections will be fair and peaceful, adding that the government will ensure democracy prevails.

“I want to assure you that there will be no violence in 2027 or on any other day in the future. Our country is peaceful, it will be peaceful, we will maintain democracy and we will continue with the elections peacefully," he said.

"There will never be another day when brothers from the same country will fight and hurt each other because of the elections.”

Kindiki equated leaders preaching violence to bandits and terrorists.

He, however, said that while these leaders are allowed to criticise the president and government as much as they want, threatening violence will not be tolerated.

“Anybody preaching and prophesying violence is as dangerous as the bandits of the North Rift and the terrorists of the Boni enclave who have for years been shedding blood in our country," the DP said.

"They can abuse the President all day and night, oppose the government from Monday to Monday, but threatening chaos and violence is not a matter for discussion. We shall never allow it."

His remarks come after former DP Rigathi Gachagua had earlier cautioned that unrest could occur if the 2027 elections are not conducted fairly.

Gachagua’s remarks have also attracted criticism from several leaders.
