Integrity Questions Plague National Honours List as Ruto, Raila Allies Dominate

The Parliamentary Honours Advisory Committee has recently ignited a national debate following its publication of a provisional list of at least 60 nominees for national honours. A notable majority of these individuals are identified as sitting Members of Parliament who are politically aligned with, and sympathetic to, President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s broad-based government, suggesting a significant political influence in the selection process for these prestigious awards. The proposed recognitions encompass various esteemed categories, including the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear, Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear, Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear, and the Head of State Commendation, each intended to honor distinguished service and contributions to the nation.
However, the release of this controversial shortlist has plunged the country into significant disquiet. Critics and the public alike have highlighted a stark discrepancy between the criteria outlined in the National Honours Act and the backgrounds of some of the nominated individuals. The Act unequivocally stipulates that national honours are to be bestowed upon persons who exemplify outstanding qualities, acts of heroism, sacrifice, bravery, patriotism, or leadership, all dedicated to the defense, benefit, or betterment of the country or its counties.Alarmingly, reports indicate that the parliamentary committee’s shortlist includes individuals who have been implicated in cases of corruption, abuse of office, and various criminal offences. This apparent disregard for the foundational principles of integrity and public service has provoked serious questions about the fairness, transparency, and ethical standards applied in the selection process, underscoring the imperative for rigorous adherence to the spirit and letter of the National Honours Act.
