Iconic Boards of Canada Hint at Comeback with Mysterious Warp Records Campaign

The acclaimed Scottish electronic music duo, Boards of Canada (BoC), consisting of brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin, appears to be on the cusp of ending a 13-year hiatus, stirring immense excitement among their dedicated fanbase. This speculation arises from a series of cryptic posters disseminated by Warp Records, the beloved British independent label that is home to BoC.
These puzzling images, shared by Warp without commentary on its official social channels, offer more questions than answers but contain distinct hallmarks of the duo's unique aesthetic. The posters depict 'zombified children', a visual motif directly reminiscent of the artwork for BoC’s seminal 1998 album, "Music Has The Right to Children." Each image is also emblazoned with a brand that subtly invokes the electronic act's iconic Hexagon Sun logo, a familiar symbol to their connoisseur audience.
The intricate layer of easter eggs continues beyond the imagery. Visible within the posters are New York and London phone numbers, the subtle edge of a “City of Westminster” street sign, and even a star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The collective meaning of these diverse clues remains a mystery, adding to the enigmatic allure that has defined Boards of Canada throughout their career.
Known for their secretive nature, the universe-building pair rarely grants interviews and has only performed a handful of live shows, predominantly in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Their most recent studio album, "Tomorrow’s Harvest," released in 2013, marked a significant milestone, peaking at No. 7 in the U.K. – their first top 10 entry – and reaching No. 13 on the Billboard 200, their debut on the all-genres U.S. albums chart, alongside a top 40 appearance on Australia’s ARIA Chart.
Interestingly, the promotional strategy for "Tomorrow’s Harvest" also involved a subtle, drip-fed string of clues, mirroring the current cryptic campaign. In 2019, a 'comeback of sorts' occurred with the release of "XYZ," a previously unreleased track from their July 1998 Peel Session, featured on Warp Records' 30th-anniversary package, "WXAXRXP Sessions." More recently, 34 weeks prior to the current teasers, BoC’s Instagram announced the 30th anniversary of their first publicly available vinyl mini-album, "Twoism," along with a new batch available on wax.
While Boards of Canada’s impact transcends conventional metrics like hits or streams, the timing of Warp’s current teaser, just days before the annual celebration of vinyl record stores, Record Store Day, suggests that the new announcement could allude to an exclusive release for the event. Only time will truly reveal the full meaning behind this latest captivating mystery from the adored electronic duo.
