I found blood on his duvet, Mohbad's dad recounts son's final moments

Joseph Aloba, father of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has shared an account of his son’s final moments before his death.

In an interview with social media personality VeryDarkMan, Mr Aloba said he saw blood on Mohbad’s duvet shortly before the 27-year-old was confirmed dead.

“I found blood on his duvet,” he said.

“There was a nurse that gave him an injection. After giving him the injection, Mohbad told her not to leave, but she said she wanted to go and collect drip and injection. He told her, ‘Don’t go, don’t go.’ The woman left. I was downstairs. I did not know all these things. By the time I came upstairs, Mohbad had collapsed. He had struggled, but nobody heard his voice. I was the one who rushed him to the hospital.”

Mr Aloba explained that he used a bike to take the singer to the hospital.

“I had to stop a bike, because the car was with Wunmi. I climbed the bike. I held Mohbad on the bike to the hospital. On getting there, they checked him and said he was dead already,” he said.

Mr Aloba also addressed public assumptions that he blamed Naira Marley, Mohbad’s former record label boss, for his son’s death.

“I never said Naira Marley killed my son,” he said. “Don’t blame Naira Marley for my son’s death. I tried my best to reach him, but everything was in vain. When this issue happened, I wanted to trek to his house, but I was scared because I didn’t know what I would meet there.”

He further expressed hope that justice will prevail following the interview with VeryDarkMan.

“I am very happy. This VDM that came out helped me a lot. I can say I’ve won in getting justice,” he added.

Despite the delay in justice, Mohbad’s father says he remains optimistic. “I want justice,” he said, “but even if the government doesn’t do anything, God will judge them all.”

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023. The singer’s death caused public outrage and led to widespread calls for justice under the trending hashtag #JusticeForMohbad. Protests and candlelight processions were held across Nigeria and in countries like the US, UK and Canada.

The singer was formerly signed to Marlian Music, a label owned by Naira Marley. He left the label in 2022, alleging threats to his life, unpaid royalties, and physical assault.

Shortly before his death, videos surfaced online showing Mohbad being harassed by individuals allegedly linked to his former label associates.

The Lagos State Police Command exhumed Mohbad’s body on September 21, 2023 and conducted an autopsy.

In May 2024, Lagos State commissioner for information and strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, announced that the toxicology test conducted in the US was “inconclusive.”
