Mohbad: Court directs prosecution of auxiliary nurse, queries police inaction

A Lagos coroner’s court has ordered the prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe over her alleged role in the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Magistrate C.A. Shotobi, who presided over the coroner’s inquest in Ikorodu, gave the ruling on Friday.

The court also directed an investigation into the alleged inaction of the police after Mohbad filed a petition before his death.

“The nurse, Mrs Feyisayo Ogedengbe, administered the injections that led to the singer’s death,” Shotobi said.

“She was not a qualified nurse and the injections ought not to have been administered by her.”

The court said the singer died from complications arising from an injection administered by the auxiliary nurse, adding that she was “neither a registered nurse nor a licensed medical practitioner and, therefore, acted unlawfully.”

The coroner also blamed regulatory gaps in the health sector for allowing unqualified individuals to practise without supervision.

In addition, the magistrate ordered that the authorities investigate the police’s alleged failure to act on a petition filed by Mohbad before his death, describing it as a possible case of official negligence.

Mohbad, a former signee of Marlian Music owned by Naira Marley, died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.

In October 2023, the Lagos State Police Command named Ogedengbe as the prime suspect in the case. The command said the nurse administered three injections: tetanus toxoid, paracetamol and Ceftriaxone at the singer’s residence in Lekki.

Commissioner of Police Idowu Owohunwa stated that Mohbad reacted to the drugs, began vomiting, developed goosebumps and convulsed before he was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

“She administered the doses and went back home on the 12th, and he died hours later,” he said.

In February, the Lagos State director of public prosecutions (DPP) advised that Ogedengbe and one Ayobami Sadiq, a friend who invited the nurse, should be prosecuted for recklessness and negligence under Section 251 of the Lagos State Criminal Law.

The DPP, however, cleared Naira Marley, show promoter Sam Larry and singer Primeboy of any involvement in the death, stating they had no case to answer.

Following the coroner’s ruling, the DPP is expected to formally commence prosecution against the nurse.

The late singer was buried a day after his death in Ikorodu but exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy. The Lagos State Government later said the autopsy result was inconclusive.
