Horror in Tameside: Acid Attack Prompts Massive Emergency Response

A police scene was established in Ashton town centre following reports of an acid attack outside a McDonald’s restaurant. The incident occurred on Warrington Street, near the fast food premises, at approximately 4pm on Friday, May 8. A police cordon was immediately put in place, resulting in the closure of the road from Bow Street, as emergency services converged on the scene.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that two men have been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with what was described as a ‘hazmat incident’. Authorities indicated that the alleged assault involved the use of a corrosive substance. A man in his 30s was transported to hospital for treatment; his injuries are fortunately not deemed life-threatening or life-changing. The two arrested men, aged in their 40s and 50s, remain in custody.

A police scene remains active as investigations continue, but officials have assured the public that there is no perceived risk to the wider community. In addition to police and ambulance services, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue confirmed their involvement, with two fire crews attending the incident to manage the hazardous materials aspect.
