Horror Crash: Car Plows Into Busy JD Gym, Two Injured, Chaos Ensues

A car crashed into the wall of a JD Gym in Bury on Tuesday afternoon, April 14, causing injuries to two people and significant structural damage to the building. Emergency services, including paramedics and fire crews, were swiftly called to the scene at the Angouleme retail park. Chaotic video footage shared on social media from inside the gym showed dust and bricks falling as customers were using the facilities, with people heard shouting “move, move!” moments after the collision.

The incident, which occurred around 4:45 pm, involved a vehicle that ploughed into the external wall of the gym, becoming wedged. A large cordon was immediately put in place, surrounding the car park and the damaged building, leading to the gym's temporary closure due to the extensive damage. Rochdale Road and George Street in the town centre were also closed as a result, with Bury Council urging people to avoid the area.

Two individuals sustained injuries in the collision. A man in his 60s, who was inside the gym at the time, was struck by the car and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and also sustained injuries. Both were treated at the scene by paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and subsequently taken to hospital. The woman driver has since been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and remains in hospital.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed their response to the incident, noting the car had driven through the wall of JD Gym, resulting in structural damage. A statement issued by GMP on 14/04/2026 specified that officers, with assistance from NWAS and the Greater Manchester Fire Service, were on site and urged anyone with information to contact them, quoting log 2424 of 14/04/2026.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) also provided details, stating that two fire engines from Bury and Whitefield stations, along with the technical rescue unit from Ashton, were mobilised around 5 pm. Firefighters successfully extricated the woman from the car. Fire crews remained at the scene, collaborating with GMP and the local council's building inspection team to ensure the area's safety.

In response to the incident, JD Gyms issued an urgent statement via social media. They confirmed the vehicle made contact with the exterior of the building, causing damage to part of the gym. As a precaution and in the interest of safety, the gym will remain closed until further notice. Building surveyors are expected to attend the following morning to assess the damage. Members have been automatically granted multi-site access to neighbouring JD Gyms locations as the team works to reopen the Bury facility as soon as possible.
