Revolutionary EV Tech: Next BMW M3 Electric to Feature Unexpected Gear System
BMW M is poised to redefine electric driving with its first EV M car, featuring paddle-controlled "performance stages" for dynamic feedback and a unique, emotionally engaging electric soundtrack. Based on the Neue Klasse architecture, the upcoming model also introduces a refined design aesthetic with slimmer, integrated kidney grilles, signaling a new era for M performance. BMW M is taking a distinctive approach to the realm of electric performance vehicles, seeking to infuse its first electric M car with the excitement and drama traditionally associated with internal-combustion engines. While many slow electric vehicles inherently feel quick, the true challenge lies in making a fast EV feel genuinely thrilling without the familiar cues of an engine revving or a transmission shifting gears. Automakers like Hyundai have introduced systems, such as the Ioniq 5 N's N e-Shift, which manipulate electric motor torque to mimic gear shifts, a rev limiter, and even the jolt of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, complemented by synthetic engine noises.
BMW M, however, aims for more than mere imitation. Its upcoming electric M model, built on the Neue Klasse architecture and featuring four electric motors, is expected to be one of the quickest M cars ever. More importantly, the brand is meticulously crafting the sensory experience from behind the wheel. Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, confirmed that the production car will incorporate "different stages" controlled by paddle shifters. These stages are designed to provide drivers with the feedback traditionally delivered by gears, without replicating the disadvantages of a conventional gearbox, such as the momentary power interruption during a shift. BMW M's philosophy is to achieve a similar feeling of progression and engagement in an electric car.
The concept extends to the vehicle's sound. Van Meel emphasized that every M car possesses a unique and natural sound that resonates with its character, creating a sense of belonging for the driver. The primary challenge for the electric M car's sound is to make it feel organic, engaging, and emotional, intrinsically tied to the electric motor's characteristics, perhaps resembling a turbine. BMW has experimented with recording sounds from various M engines, including four-cylinders, six-cylinders, V-8s, and even the V-10 from the E60 M5. However, van Meel concluded that simply transplanting these sounds into an EV would not feel authentic or appropriate, aiming instead to avoid a sound profile that evokes comparisons to something like the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Beyond the powertrain, BMW M's design language is also undergoing a significant evolution. Oliver Heilmer, head of design at BMW M, stated that the Neue Klasse era presented an opportunity to move away from the large vertical kidney grilles that have characterized recent M models like the M3 and M4. This shift represents a change in mindset towards reduction and focusing on essential design elements. The M Concept Neue Klasse embodies this approach with much slimmer, more integrated kidney grilles, illuminated to preserve their iconic shape. The primary function of the kidneys becomes more of a visual signature, with most cooling air now entering lower in the front fascia. Heilmer noted that this design inspiration draws from earlier BMW models such as the 1500 and 507, which featured simpler, more horizontal front-end treatments.
Despite a radical visual departure from current M3s, Heilmer assures that the next generation will remain unmistakably an M car. He also countered any perception of the M Concept Neue Klasse looking overly futuristic, asserting that its elements, being based on aerodynamics and functional specifications, are ultimately more timeless. The full extent of how much of the M Concept Neue Klasse will translate into the production model remains to be seen, with the anticipated launch in 2027. Nevertheless, the concept offers clear insights into the direction and character of BMW M's inaugural generation of electric performance cars.
