Horrifying Diagnosis: Man's Back Pain Revealed as Deadly Pancreatic Cancer with Year to Live

Kris Cooke, a 46-year-old plasterer from Erith, southeast London, initially dismissed his persistent backache as a common occupational hazard, only to receive a life-altering diagnosis: advanced pancreatic cancer. After experiencing shortness of breath and severe pain in his upper right back for several months, he sought medical attention. X-rays at the hospital revealed a collapsed left lung, multiple blood clots around his heart, and a significant lump on his pancreas. Days later, the devastating news confirmed the lump was aggressive pancreatic cancer, leading to his referral for palliative care.
The diagnosis came as a profound shock to Mr. Cooke and his loved ones, including his close friend Louise Comiskey, 43, from Dartford, Kent, and his long-term girlfriend, now wife, Maria, 42. Despite leading a remarkably healthy lifestyle – being vegan, practicing yoga, and having no prior significant health issues – the cancer spread rapidly. Kris and Maria, who had been trying for a baby and planning their wedding, decided to proceed with their nuptials swiftly. They had an emotional wedding ceremony in his hospital room, wanting to tie the knot while they still could.
Tragically, the day after their hospital wedding, Mr. Cooke received further grim news: the cancer had metastasized to his liver, leaving him with an estimated prognosis of only 6-12 months to live. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy in an effort to extend his life, though he endures extreme tiredness and is on high doses of morphine for pain management. To ease the financial burden on Maria and his family, friends, led by Ms. Comiskey, launched a GoFundMe page, which quickly surpassed £5,500, a testament to Kris's popularity as a 'social butterfly'. His primary concern remains ensuring his partner does not have to worry about money during this difficult time.
In light of his experience, Mr. Cooke and his loved ones are urging others, especially those in physically demanding professions like building, to take all aches and pains seriously and seek medical advice promptly. Maria emphasized that builders are particularly prone to ignoring such symptoms, mistaking them for work-related strains. Louise echoed this sentiment, stressing, 'It can happen to anybody. If you have an ache, even if you are fit and well, don't ignore it. Always get checked out.'
Pancreatic cancer, often dubbed the 'silent killer' due to its subtle and easily overlooked symptoms, is a particularly aggressive and deadly disease. It claims approximately 100,000 lives annually in the UK, equating to one death every hour, and is considered one of 14 cancers showing an increase in incidence. The pancreas plays a vital role in digestion and hormone production, including insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood sugar. When affected by cancer, its ability to produce these hormones can be impaired, leading to unstable blood sugar levels.
The NHS identifies various warning signs, including indigestion symptoms such as bloating, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue, a high temperature, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel habits like diarrhea or constipation. Disturbing research indicates that over half of patients diagnosed with the 'least curable' cancers—which include pancreatic cancer alongside lung, liver, brain, esophageal, and stomach cancers—do not survive beyond a year. In the UK, around 10,500 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year, with more than half succumbing within three months of diagnosis, and fewer than eleven percent living for five years.
A critical challenge in combating pancreatic cancer is the absence of effective early detection tests. This inadequacy means that approximately 80 percent of individuals are not diagnosed until the cancer has already spread to other organs, rendering life-saving treatment no longer a viable option. The harrowing statistics underscore the urgent need for awareness and vigilance regarding even minor, persistent health anomalies.
