Homeschooling Pays Off: Kid Earns £5k Monthly, But Critics Still Judge Mum's Choice

Jason Graystone, a self-described "wealth enthusiast" and host of the Always Free podcast, has sparked considerable debate by revealing his decision to withdraw both his children from traditional schooling at the age of 14 to educate them at home. Graystone staunchly defends his unconventional approach, asserting that much of what is taught in schools today is "pointless" and that children are often present "for the sake of it" rather than genuine engagement.
Graystone's philosophy centers on guiding his children to excel in areas they are naturally interested in. For his youngest son, this meant fostering an interest in a creative career, leading him to independently learn editing and animation. By the age of 16, his son had established a YouTube channel teaching editing techniques and producing various short-form content. Remarkably, he is now earning £5,000 per month and works as his father's editor, contributing significantly to the growth of Graystone's own YouTube channel from 50,000 to half a million subscribers. Graystone contrasts this success with his son's friends, who, two years later, are still pursuing GCSEs without a clear career path.
Despite the apparent success story, Graystone's decision has met with divided opinions from the public. Critics question the efficacy of such an approach for children aspiring to professions like medicine, law, or engineering, which demand rigorous academic dedication often difficult to replicate in a home setting. Others highlight the foundational importance of subjects like mathematics, science, and English, even if disliked at the time, for essential life skills. Furthermore, the social aspect of school, crucial for personal development and building lifelong friendships, was also emphasized by some commenters. Concerns were also raised about limiting a child's exposure to a wide range of subjects and the potential for excessive screen time.
Responding to these criticisms, Graystone remains unswayed, citing his youngest son's substantial monthly earnings as evidence of the validity of his choices. He believes his son's financial success and fulfillment in his chosen career outweigh concerns about broader academic topics, reinforcing his conviction that traditional schooling no longer adequately serves the needs of today's children.
