Bolu Essien: The Creative Force Bringing 'Girls’ Hostel' Back with a Dramatic, Nostalgic Flair!

Bolu Essien, a creative force who intimately understands the world of public girls-only boarding schools, brings her experiences to life in her latest drama series, "Girls' Hostel." Essien created, wrote, produced, and stars in this project, which promises a compelling blend of nostalgia, intense drama, and raw relatability. The series delves into the complexities of adolescence, exploring the challenges and formative moments that arise within the tightly controlled environment of a hostel.

The narrative of "Girls' Hostel" centers on Lara, portrayed by Bolu Essien herself, who holds the coveted position of the school's reigning queen bee. Her established order is disrupted by the arrival of Ufoma, a wealthy transfer student with a mysterious past, played by Onyinye Odokoro. As a fierce rivalry begins to brew between Lara and Ufoma, carefully maintained reputations are threatened, and deep-seated secrets risk unraveling, setting the stage for high-stakes drama.

"Girls' Hostel" is executive produced by the dynamic duo Emmanuel Essien and Bolu Essien. The production has garnered significant support from a range of prominent brands including MTN, Nivea, Indomie, Power Oil, Cowbell, Twisco, Knorr, and Closeup. The series promises to explore universal themes such as sisterhood, the bonds of friendship, intricate power dynamics, the struggle for survival, and the critical formative experiences that shape young women during their adolescence.

Ahead of its highly anticipated premiere on BoluEssienTV on YouTube, scheduled for February 13, Bolu Essien shared insights into the inspiration and unique aspects of the show. When asked what makes "Girls' Hostel" stand out, Essien confidently stated, "Everything." She described it as both "a nod to the past and a mirror to the present," emphasizing that while some experiences are drawn from real life, others are imagined. She believes the show will resonate deeply with many Nigerians, touching upon the stage where "the oppressed can become the oppressor" and where young people are desperately seeking validation and recognition.

Essien also reflected on the timing of the show's creation, attributing its release to "God's timing." She revealed that she had initially planned to produce the series in 2023 but faced setbacks. Her tenacious spirit and unwavering belief in the project, coupled with persistent prayer and hard work, ultimately brought "Girls' Hostel" to fruition.

Regarding the casting process, Bolu Essien highlighted her intimate understanding of the characters. Having spent extensive time with the series during its writing phase, she knew their personalities, behaviors, speech patterns, motives, and even their detailed background stories. This meticulous documentation helped structure their external actions. She sought actors who could fully embody these characters, noting that they are reflections of the realities in many children's lives and homes. Essien expressed her satisfaction with the cast's ability to take the provided details and infuse them with their unique interpretations, contributing significantly to the show's authenticity.

The talented ensemble cast features Bolu Essien and Onyinye Odokoro in leading roles, supported by Eva Ibiam, Ronke Omooba Adepoju, Darasimi Ogbetah, Inem King, Miriam Peters, and Tomi Oladipo. Veteran actors Remi Surutu takes on the role of the Matron, while Oluwatoyin Alausa portrays Ufoma’s mother, adding depth and experience to the production.

When asked about her proudest aspects of the show, Essien cited many things. Foremost, she expressed gratitude for the "gift of storytelling," finding immense joy and fulfillment in it. From a production standpoint, she is incredibly proud of the dedication of her team: the actors who gave their talents wholeheartedly, the director Bunmi Akingbola, and the entire crew who poured their skills into the project.

Essien is a stickler for details and authenticity. Despite not having "the deepest pockets," she refused to compromise on creating a believable world. She shared how one of the hostels was filmed inside a hall, which was completely transformed with bunk beds, lockers, boxes, and pillows to create the feel of a real school environment. All uniforms, bedsheets, and hostel wear were custom-made, and even school bags and notebooks were purchased to enhance the world's believability, showcasing the rigorous effort put into the project. She specifically gave a shout-out to her Art Director, Sarah of SB Creatives, for her pivotal role in bringing this vision to life.

Audiences can expect a rich experience filled with "drama" and "conversations." Essien also views the show as "almost like a call to pay attention to children," emphasizing that adolescence is a crucial stage where lives are shaped. She believes it requires a collective effort from parents and school authorities to raise responsible citizens. Aligning with the reputation of Evolving Light studios, known for projects like "Becoming Abi" on Netflix and "Viral Salon 001," "Girls' Hostel" is poised to claim its significant space in storytelling. While hinting at "a lot" of surprises, Essien refrained from giving further clues, encouraging viewers to enjoy the full experience upon the show's release.
