Citizen TV reported that Calvine Omondi Onditi was found dead in a police holding cell at Kipasi Police Post on Sunday, June 15, a few hours after being arrested.
According to the police report, the 36-year-old fisherman was arrested by the area chief at around 3am after reportedly being found in a compromising situation in a goat pen.
The suspect was handed over to police at Kipasi for further processing, only to be found dead in the cell.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilim confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect was discovered hanging from the roof of the cell, held up by a pair of trousers.
The incident occurred as officers were preparing to transfer him to Mbita Police Station for further interrogation.
However, the family and local leaders have disputed the police report on the circumstances surrounding Omondi's death.
Evance Osano, a cousin of the deceased, demanded an independent probe, suggesting foul play could be at play.
“We are not convinced he took his own life. We demand a thorough and transparent investigation,” Osano said.
Already, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have launched an investigation into the death.
The body was transferred to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem.
In other news, Kenyans and opposition leaders continued to demand justice after the murder of blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang.
The blogger died at Central Police Station hours after he was arrested for allegedly tarnishing the name of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.
IPOA has so far arrested six suspects linked to Ojwang's murder.
Among those arrested are OCS Samson Talam, police officer Juma Mukwana, and a technician who allegedly deleted CCTV footage.
IPOA detectives also arrested three civilians who were allegedly hired by police officers to torture Ojwang in his cell.

Meanwhile, Meshack Opiyo, the father of the blogger, openly criticised the arrest of junior police officers in connection with the death.
He termed the recent apprehensions as insufficient and accused top police leadership of escaping accountability.
The incident occurred a week ago when Ojwang was arrested in Homa Bay and later found dead in Nairobi, only hours after being transferred.
