Nigerian Government Announces Emergency Evacuation Plans for Citizens in Israel and Iran

The Federal Government of Nigeria is currently finalising emergency evacuation plans for its citizens stranded in Israel and Iran, following a significant escalation in hostilities between the two nations. This critical initiative was announced by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement released on Tuesday night. Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran have already commenced efforts to identify affected nationals and coordinate their safe return amidst the rising tensions.

Nigerians residing in the conflict zones have been strongly advised to remain calm, strictly observe local security guidelines, and promptly register with the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Mission for further instructions and updates. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commended the dedicated efforts of its diplomatic staff in both Tel Aviv and Tehran, acknowledging their commitment to reaching out to the Nigerian community during these challenging times. The government has also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad, noting ongoing collaboration with international partners and local authorities to ensure a timely and secure evacuation process.

In addition to these evacuation efforts, Nigeria has reiterated its urgent call for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and Iran. The government implores all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law, and prioritise the protection of civilians. Nigeria stands firm in its support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and reaffirms its longstanding commitment to regional and global peace and stability.

The current escalation stems from a major air campaign launched by Israel, reportedly targeting approximately 100 locations across Iran, including nuclear and military facilities. These strikes, which occurred earlier, resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian military officials. Among those reportedly killed were General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander, Hossein Salami. Major-General Gholamali Rashid, commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters, was also reported to have died in the attacks. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, condemned the Israeli strikes as a “declaration of war” and warned of a “bitter and painful” retaliation, with the Iranian military also vowing an unlimited response. Further details regarding the evacuation logistics and timelines are expected to be disseminated through official government channels in the coming days.
