Explosions Reported in Iran's City of Tabriz Amid Regional Tensions

Early on Tuesday morning, explosions were reported in Tabriz, Iran's north-western city, a location strategically significant due to its major air force base. These incidents occurred amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Local media, including the Ham Mihan newspaper, reported two distinct blasts occurring within five minutes of each other. The Mehr news agency subsequently released a video depicting thick black smoke billowing in the aftermath of these explosions, underscoring the severity of the incidents.

Tabriz, situated more than 600 kilometres (375 miles) from Tehran, has been identified as a critical military zone and had reportedly been targeted by Israeli airstrikes in the preceding days. While the precise cause of the recent explosions has not been officially confirmed, they undeniably coincide with intensified cross-border hostilities between the two nations.

In a related and separate development, Iranian Army Ground Forces Commander General Kioumars Heidari asserted that Iran had conducted precision drone attacks overnight against strategic targets in Tel Aviv and Haifa. Speaking on state television, Heidari claimed that these drones were "equipped with precise destruction and targeting capabilities." However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) presented a conflicting account, stating that they had successfully intercepted approximately 30 drones. The IDF indicated that most of these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were believed to have originated from Iran, but crucially, the military reported no successful drone strikes on Israeli territory, with a significant number of the UAVs being shot down before they could even breach Israeli airspace. These events collectively highlight the volatile and escalating nature of the military and political tensions between Iran and Israel.
