Sarandon revealed that she was terminated by her agency specifically due to her activism, stating, “I was fired by my agency, specifically for marching and speaking out about Gaza, for asking for a ceasefire.” This action, she claims, made it exceedingly difficult for her to secure roles in American film and television.

The "Thelma and Louise" star explained that after facing what she described as an inability to participate in major film projects or anything connected with Hollywood, she sought and found representation in Europe. She successfully secured agents in England and Italy, where she has since been able to work. Recently, Sarandon completed a film in Italy and performed in a play at the Old Vic for several months, illustrating her continued professional engagements outside the U.S. She also mentioned an incident where an Italian director who hired her was explicitly advised against doing so, indicating that the pressures against her hiring persist, though the director chose to disregard the advice.

Currently, Sarandon has adapted her career trajectory, specializing in smaller, independent films, often working with first-time directors. Her comments also extended to a broader comparison of intellectual freedom between the United States and Spain. She highlighted Spain's more open environment, praising the Spanish president's supportive stance on Gaza and the strong voice of actors like Javier Bardem on the issue. This, she noted, is particularly significant for individuals in the United States who feel a sense of repression and censorship.

These candid remarks were made during a discussion on February 27, coinciding with her reception of the International Goya award. The prestigious accolade recognized her extensive career, which includes notable performances in films such as “Dead Man Walking” and “Atlantic City.” The Spanish Film Academy’s Goya Awards ceremony was scheduled for February 28 in Barcelona. It was previously reported in 2023 that Sarandon was dropped by UTA following her participation in a pro-Palestine rally held in New York City.
