Hacks' Shocking Season 5 Casting: Sci-Fi Icon's Arrival Holds Deeper Meaning!

HBO's critically acclaimed series, Hacks, enters its final season with Jean Smart's Deborah Vance intensely focused on solidifying her legacy as a legendary stand-up comedian. As always, at her side is Ava Daniels, played by Emmy-winner Hannah Einbinder, a crucial partner in the comedy created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky.
In Episode 2 of Hacks Season 5, Deborah and Ava embark on a mission to a convention. The goal is for Deborah to forge more personal connections with her fans, a grassroots effort deemed essential if she hopes to land a prestigious gig at Madison Square Garden. However, in true comedic fashion, things rarely go according to plan for the duo.
The episode's most unexpected and compelling storyline, however, unfolds with Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and his business partner Kayla (Megan Stalter). At the same convention, Jimmy is starstruck by Renee O'Connor, renowned for her role in Xena: Warrior Princess. This encounter unexpectedly presents them with a golden opportunity that could significantly benefit their agency.
During an interview, Megan Stalter and Paul W. Downs reflected on the elements that cemented their characters' dynamic early in the series. Downs revealed that Stalter was a dream choice for Kayla during the writing process, noting her ability to enhance the show from her very first day on set. He recalled early instances of Stalter's improvisation, like her potentially unscripted "lo siento papi" in Season 1, and memorable lines such as "girly" or "girlina" which quickly became part of Kayla's distinctive vernacular.
Stalter reciprocated the praise, highlighting the writers' brilliance. She spoke about lines she found incredibly funny and challenging to deliver without breaking character, referencing a memorable joke about a hotel room smelling like an ex-boyfriend's bicycle seat or a prostate joke. Downs confirmed one of these gems: "The handlebar was up against his G spot."
The conversation also delved into their on-screen chemistry and mutual admiration. Stalter shared that Hacks was her first TV job, and she learned immensely from Downs, particularly regarding improvisation. She lauded his ability to make her feel comfortable to improv from the first season. Furthermore, Stalter revealed that she never needs a tear stick for emotional scenes with Downs, crediting his genuine feeling and powerful acting for her ability to cry authentically on set. Downs affirmed this, teasing a particularly beautiful and emotional scene for Kayla in Episode 8, which he found moving to perform alongside Stalter.
Both actors emphasized their strong off-camera bond, which translates into their on-screen performances. Downs expressed his deep admiration for Stalter's comedic talent, noting that working with someone so good motivates him to be his best. Stalter echoed this sentiment, describing her joy in working with him and her goal to make him laugh during scenes. She also mentioned the immense satisfaction of hearing co-creator Lucia Aniello laugh, describing it as a truly rewarding experience.
Regarding the specific plot point involving Renee O'Connor and Xena: Warrior Princess in Episode 2, Downs explained its deeper meaning. He stated that the episode is fundamentally a "love letter to fans" and an exploration of the power of fandom. He drew a parallel to how Xena itself originated from enthusiastic fan reception of the character on Hercules. Downs, a childhood Xena fan himself, felt it was the perfect, surprising obsession for Jimmy, allowing the show to portray a character who is a fanatic within its ensemble. This choice resonated with the creators' own appreciation for television and the dedicated communities it fosters.
New episodes of Hacks Season 5 are released on Thursdays on HBO Max, continuing to explore the intricate world of stand-up comedy and the relationships that define it.
