Rail passengers across Greater Manchester have been warned of a second consecutive day of major chaos on Friday, August 7, following an electricity supply failure that initially caused widespread disruption on Thursday, August 6. The incident, stemming from an electricity supply failure at a communications centre in Manchester, impacted signalling shortly before 2pm on Thursday, leading to significant cancellations and delays across numerous train services.
The widespread issues are currently affecting a multitude of operators, including Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express, and Transport for Wales. National Rail issued an update on Thursday evening, cautioning that major disruption is expected to persist until the end of the day on Friday, August 7. Engineers are diligently working to restore the issue, with hopes for a return to normal services, though initial disruptions are anticipated on Friday morning due to trains being in incorrect locations.
Northern, one of the heavily impacted operators, has strongly advised customers to avoid travelling before 10:00 on Friday morning if possible. They also urged passengers to check their travel plans before setting out, as some services may be amended or unable to run at all. Specifically, Northern routes into Manchester Victoria, and services between Preston, Bolton, Wigan, Liverpool, and Manchester, were suspended for the remainder of Thursday due to the ongoing major signalling problems in the Manchester area.
