Global Stage Awaits: Burna Boy Headlining First World Cup Final Halftime Show

Award-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy is poised to make history as the first African artiste ever to perform at the FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show. This groundbreaking inclusion broadens the musical diversity of the event, introducing Afrobeats to an international lineup that already features global pop, Latin music, and K-pop.

FIFA had previously announced in May an star-studded roster including Madonna, Shakira, and BTS as headliners for the inaugural halftime spectacle. The show is curated by Chris Martin, the acclaimed lead singer of the band Coldplay, promising a high-caliber musical experience. Burna Boy's participation marks a significant milestone, solidifying his position as the first African artiste to grace this prestigious stage.

Earlier in the year, Burna Boy collaborated with Shakira on the tournament's official anthem, 'Dai Dai,' a track they performed together at the opening ceremony in June. Reflecting on his selection for the halftime show, Burna Boy expressed his profound gratitude in a statement: "To represent Africa on the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show is a privilege and a responsibility that I don't take lightly. I'm honoured to be part of a performance that not only celebrates football and culture, but also helps create greater opportunities for children through education around the world."

While music has always been an integral part of World Cup tournaments, its presence has traditionally been limited to opening and closing ceremonies. However, with the introduction of this dedicated halftime show, FIFA appears to be adopting a strategy reminiscent of the NFL's Super Bowl halftime shows. These NFL events have become cultural staples, hosting legendary artists like Michael Jackson and Beyoncé, and serving as major advertising and cultural moments that captivate audiences far beyond sports enthusiasts.

FIFA successfully tested this new concept last year during the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, where artists such as Doja Cat, Tems, and J Balvin delivered performances in partnership with Global Citizen. The upcoming inaugural 11-minute halftime show, scheduled for the July 19 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, will also feature additional global talents including Justin Bieber, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the PS22 Chorus from Staten Island, New York, and Coldplay. The event is anticipated to attract one of the largest global television audiences of the year.
