Affordable Adventure: New Airstream Shakes Up Travel Trailer Market!

Airstream has introduced a new, more affordable aluminum travel trailer, the 17-foot World Traveler 17RB, priced at $64,400. This new model is designed to be towable by smaller SUVs and pickups, addressing a market need for those who desire the classic Airstream experience but are on a budget or lack a heavy-duty towing vehicle. The 17RB is $3,900 less than the 22-foot World Traveler and an even more significant $11,000 less than the 16-foot Bambi, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

The World Traveler series, based on a platform originally developed for European and Asian markets, features a more compact design. These trailers are six inches narrower and five inches lower than standard Airstream travel trailers, with the reduced height largely due to the air conditioner being mounted inside the trailer rather than on the roof. Despite its smaller overall footprint, the 17RB's length is actually a foot longer than the smallest Bambi and Caravel models. It also boasts less hitch weight, at 375 pounds compared to the Bambi’s 475 pounds, while maintaining identical empty (3,150 pounds) and maximum gross weights (3,500 pounds) as the 16-foot Bambi.

To achieve its lighter weight, the World Traveler incorporates several key differences from its more expensive siblings. Notably, it features fewer and smaller windows, which are made of plastic instead of glass. This means buyers will forgo the iconic wraparound glass windows in the dining area, a signature Airstream feature. Inside, the World Traveler’s interior is described as “Scandinavian-inspired” minimalist, characterized by white aluminum walls. Despite the minimalist aesthetic and reduced window count, the 17RB is far from a bare-bones shell, offering a comprehensive set of amenities.

The interior of the 17RB is well-appointed, including a comfortable bed (taller but slightly narrower than a standard full-size mattress), a dining table that converts into a second, smaller bunk, and a functional kitchen area. The kitchen is equipped with a sink, a two-burner propane stove, and an optional microwave. For convenience, it features a lavatory with an integrated shower, a 24-inch TV, an air conditioner, a water heater, a furnace, and a narrow coat closet. While the fresh water capacity is slightly smaller at 19 gallons (compared to 23 gallons in standard-profile 16-foot trailers), the World Traveler offers separate wastewater tanks for the shower/sink (24 gallons) and toilet (12 gallons), a notable improvement over the baby Bambi. The refrigerator is compact, measuring 2.1 cubic feet, with an additional optional 1-cubic-foot fridge available for under the dining table.

Towing the World Traveler 17RB, with its 3,500 pounds GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), is feasible for many smaller SUVs and pickups. However, vehicles towing over 1,500 pounds typically require trailer brakes. The 17RB is equipped with electric brakes, which necessitate a 7-pin connector and a brake controller on the towing vehicle. This is an important consideration, as these components are not standard or factory options on all small SUVs and some small pickups. European versions of the World Traveler utilize surge brakes, which do not require electrical wiring, raising questions about Airstream's choice for the U.S. market. Additionally, the trailer’s light GVWR leaves it with only about 350 pounds of carrying capacity, which is further reduced if optional features like a microwave or second fridge are added, or if the 160-pound full water tank is factored in, leaving less than 200 pounds for personal belongings. Despite these considerations, the Airstream World Traveler 17RB is considered a worthwhile option for its fully equipped nature within a compact, aluminum-bodied package, offering essential living functions for those willing to pack light and properly equip their towing vehicle.
