Gaming Giant Epic Games Rocked by Massive Layoffs, Over 1,000 Employees Affected

Epic Games, the creator behind the widely successful free-to-play live-service game Fortnite, has announced a significant reduction in its workforce, laying off over 1,000 employees. This decision comes two and a half years after a previous round of layoffs that affected over 800 employees. The company's CEO, Tim Sweeney, a multi-billionaire and the second-richest person in North Carolina, attributed these cutbacks to a fundamental issue of "spending significantly more than we’re making."
This move by Epic Games highlights a challenging trend within the gaming industry, where even highly successful titles like Fortnite cannot entirely insulate their developers from financial pressures. The company's action follows a period where numerous other studios have attempted to replicate the live-service model, often failing within weeks. Epic Games, despite its flagship game's massive success, now finds itself needing to make tough financial adjustments to ensure sustainability, underscoring the volatile economic landscape even for industry giants.
