Fury Erupts: Obi Demands Probe into Alleged Military Brutality at Osun Varsity
Peter Obi has voiced deep concern over allegations of military misconduct, including assault and degrading treatment, against students. He called for a thorough and transparent investigation, stressing the importance of justice for victims and protecting the Armed Forces' integrity. Obi emphasized that a nation's respect for human dignity builds confidence in its institutions.
Former Vice Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed profound distress over disturbing reports alleging misconduct by military personnel against students. In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Obi highlighted accusations that students were subjected to assault, humiliation, and dispossession of their personal belongings during a recent incident. He further raised serious concerns regarding claims that some female students endured degrading treatment, including allegations of rape.
Obi underscored the fundamental principle that every Nigerian citizen is entitled to dignity and respect. He emphasized the established reputation of the nation’s Armed Forces, noting their renown for courage, discipline, and sacrifice in defending the country. “Our Armed Forces are renowned for their courage, discipline, and sacrifice in defending our nation. They are not known for such barbarity against the very citizens they are sworn to protect,” Obi stated, expressing his belief that such alleged actions are inconsistent with the military's esteemed character.
The former Anambra State governor strongly urged the military high command to initiate a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into these serious allegations. He insisted that any personnel found culpable must be brought to justice. Obi articulated that holding responsible individuals accountable would not only ensure justice for the alleged victims but also serve to uphold and protect the integrity and reputation of the Armed Forces. Furthermore, he noted that such decisive action would act as a crucial deterrent against any future misconduct by security personnel.
Concluding his statement, Obi asserted the importance of national values, stating, “A nation that respects human dignity builds confidence in its institutions. We must never tolerate impunity or the abuse of power.” His call for accountability and justice aims to reinforce public trust in national institutions and prevent any erosion of human rights.
