Franklin Templeton Unleashes Revolutionary Bitcoin Dividend ETF

Franklin Templeton is poised to launch two innovative exchange-traded funds (ETFs) designed to convert stock dividends into bitcoin. The firm recently completed the final regulatory steps, filing a Form 8-A with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 22 to register shares of the Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF and the Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF for trading on the Nasdaq. A prospectus submitted concurrently indicated an effective date of October 27, marking the culmination of a four-month process since the initial filings in June.

The Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF, designated with the ticker FBEQ, is structured to track the VettaFi US Large-Cap 500 Bitcoin DRIP Index. This index comprises the 500 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization, weighted by their float-adjusted market cap. As of September 30, the index included 499 stocks, ranging in size from $10.2 billion to $5.5 trillion, with a notable concentration in the information technology sector. At its inception, the index allocates 95% of its assets to these stocks and 5% to bitcoin.

The core innovation of these funds lies in their dividend reinvestment mechanism, which reimagines the traditional dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP). Instead of using dividends to purchase additional shares of the dividend-paying company, Franklin Templeton's version routes that cash into bitcoin. Specifically, each dividend paid by the underlying companies, whether regular or special, is reinvested into bitcoin at the market open on the day following the ex-date. This unique approach allows the bitcoin share of the portfolio to grow with every payment, offering investors a recurring bitcoin purchase stream without the need for an external exchange account, digital wallet, or the complexities of custody decisions.

However, the bitcoin position within these funds is subject to strict limits to maintain its primary identity as a stock fund with a bitcoin sleeve, rather than a dedicated bitcoin fund. At each quarterly rebalance, any bitcoin allocation exceeding 5% is trimmed back to 4.5%. Furthermore, if the bitcoin component surpasses 20% of the index between rebalances, it is reduced to 4.5% within two business days, with the proceeds being reinvested back into stocks. The ETF itself does not directly hold bitcoin on-chain but gains exposure through various bitcoin exchange-traded products, including Franklin Templeton’s own spot fund (EZBC), bitcoin futures and options, or depositary receipts, sometimes facilitated via a Cayman Islands subsidiary.

FBEQ is designed with a competitive expense ratio of 0.09% and notably includes no 12b-1 fee. The fund is managed by Franklin Advisory Services, with Franklin Templeton Institutional serving as the sub-advisor. The portfolio management team consists of Dina Ting, Hailey Harris, Joe Diederich, and Basit Amin. The Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF operates with the same underlying mechanic but tracks the VettaFi US Innovation 100 Bitcoin DRIP Index, focusing on the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq.

These new DRIP funds underscore Franklin Templeton's broader and deepening commitment to the digital asset space. The firm previously filed for a spot bitcoin ETF in September 2023, launching it as EZBC in January 2024. In April, Franklin Templeton further expanded its capabilities by acquiring 250 Digital and establishing Franklin Crypto, an institutional digital asset division. CEO Jenny Johnson has been a vocal proponent of blockchain technology, asserting that it poses a more significant threat to Wall Street's fee structure than to its core technology. The DRIP funds extend this strategic vision, offering a pathway for a wider range of investors, such as retirees holding S&P 500-style funds, to build a bitcoin position over time through their existing dividend streams. Investors are cautioned by the prospectus that they can lose money and that bitcoin’s inherent price volatility may significantly affect the fund’s net asset value. The market's reception and the ultimate appeal of this innovative trade-off for Franklin Templeton's target audience are expected to become clearer following the October 27 effective date.
