Former Malaysian PM Abdullah Badawi dies at 85

Former Malaysian prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, affectionately known as "Pak Lah" or Uncle Lah, has passed away at the age of 85, his family announced. Abdullah, who succeeded Mahathir Mohamad in 2003, had been suffering from a prolonged illness.

Abdullah's tenure as prime minister was marked by promises of reform following Mahathir's 22-year authoritarian rule. While he initially enjoyed widespread support and led the National Front coalition to a landslide victory in the 2004 elections, he later faced criticism for perceived lacklustre leadership. Mahathir, his predecessor, eventually turned against him, contributing to his forced resignation in 2009.

In contrast to Mahathir's domineering style, Abdullah was seen as a moderate and fatherly figure. His transition into power was welcomed by many who hoped for greater freedoms. Despite criticisms, Abdullah maintained a low profile after leaving office.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim paid tribute to Abdullah, highlighting his great soul and his introduction of a new narrative in Malaysian politics. Anwar praised Abdullah's peaceful approach, noting that he "never added to the hurt with insulting words" during Anwar's difficult times. He emphasized Abdullah's preference for peace over retaliation.

Leaders from neighboring countries also expressed their condolences. Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong acknowledged Abdullah's significant contributions to Malaysia's social and economic development. Former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong remembered Abdullah's dedication and tireless work in addressing Malaysia's challenges and improving the lives of its citizens.

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will be buried on Tuesday after a state funeral.
