Star-Studded Spectacle: Musicians Dazzle at the 2026 Met Gala

The 2026 Met Gala, heralded as the biggest night in fashion, concluded on Monday, May 4, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Co-chaired by an esteemed group including Beyoncé, Anna Wintour, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams, this year's event centered around the profound intersection of fashion and art. The dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” perfectly complemented the Met’s Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Costume Art.” This theme encouraged a broad spectrum of interpretations, celebrating diverse bodies and exploring connections from the formal to the conceptual, the aesthetic to the political, and the individual to the universal.
Beyoncé made a triumphant and much-anticipated return to the Met Gala after a decade-long absence, arriving looking like royalty. She graced the red carpet in a fully bejeweled gown designed to resemble a skeleton, complete with a matched jeweled headpiece and a grand feather shawl, a creation by Olivier Rousteing. The event was a family affair for the superstar, who walked the red carpet with her husband, Jay-Z, and their eldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Blue Ivy, at just 14 years old, was a notable exception to the Met Gala's 18+ attendee rule. In a rare red carpet interview with La La Anthony, Beyoncé expressed the surreal feeling of sharing the moment with her beautiful daughter, and her excitement to experience the gala through Blue Ivy’s eyes. She also spoke about representing Olivier Rousteing and celebrating diverse body types, aligning with the “Costume Art” exhibit’s message. Despite online speculation, Beyoncé's publicist emphatically denied rumors that the gala would serve as an announcement for Act III of her album trilogy.
Madonna, the Queen of Pop, also made a striking entrance, bringing a touch of witchy wonder to the red carpet. She wore a custom Yves Saint Laurent black outfit, designed by Anthony Vaccarello, featuring a gossamer, old-timey seacraft fixed atop her head, creating the effect of a storm-tossed ship at sea. The look was inspired by British-Mexican painter Leonora Carrington’s “The Temptation of St. Anthony,” perfectly embodying the “Fashion Is Art” theme. Madonna’s appearance coincided with the teasing of her upcoming album, “Confessions II,” which includes the lead single “Bring Your Love,” a duet with Sabrina Carpenter.
Latin superstar Bad Bunny captivated attendees by artificially aging himself for his red carpet look. With white hair, wrinkle makeup, a cane, and an all-black suit adorned with a large, flowy bow, his body language expertly conveyed the senior citizen persona. When asked by La La Anthony how he consistently elevates his Met Gala presence, Bad Bunny reflected on the event as a perfect opportunity to “explore and be creative and express yourself in a different way,” jokingly adding that his transformative look took “53 years exactly” to put together.
SZA embodied the sun, radiating in a vibrant yellow dress and a jeweled floral headpiece. Designed in collaboration with Emily Adams Bode Aujla of Bode, her gown featured a corset, structured skirt, and a long train, all crafted from reworked pieces purchased on eBay. SZA explained that the look represented her “ethereal body” and the “divine feminine,” incorporating details like cowries, sari pieces, and real flowers. She shared her love for playing a character, expressing culture, and celebrating all cultures through fashion. This sustainable and unique ensemble, a collaboration between Vogue, eBay, and Bode, was highlighted as one of the evening's most captivating.
Sabrina Carpenter showcased a dual impact at the gala, both on the red carpet and on stage. Her initial red carpet gown was ingeniously made from film strips of the 1954 Audrey Hepburn movie “Sabrina,” a design by Dior by Jonathan Anderson, which she cited as one of her favorite films. Inside the Met, Carpenter achieved a pop icon milestone by duetting with Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks on the legendary ballad “Landslide.” Nicks, dressed in a glittery black gown, and Carpenter, in a shimmering golden gown, delivered a powerful performance that hushed the A-list crowd. Nicks also performed other hits, while Carpenter later returned to the stage in a colorful pop art-inspired dress to perform her own songs, including “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “House Tour.”
The four members of BLACKPINK—JISOO, JENNIE, LISA, and ROSÉ—each made distinct fashion statements on the red carpet. JISOO, making her Met Gala debut, wore a sparkly pink floral gown custom-made by Dior’s Jonathan Anderson. ROSÉ’s Yves Saint Laurent dress featured an avian theme, inspired by Georges Braque’s painting “The Birds.” LISA presented a sculptural Robert Wun creation, notably featuring arms recreated via 3D printer winding around her veiled gown. JENNIE, the last BLACKPINK member to arrive, shone in a shimmery, silver Chanel dress by Matthieu Blazy, composed of 15,000 sequined leaves, making her feel like “a mosaic art work come alive.”
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky made their usual fashionable, albeit late, entrance as one of music’s most stylish couples. Rihanna stunned in a glittering custom sculpted bronze Maison Margiela by Glenn Martens gown, intricately woven with silk and recycled computer wire-like threads, complemented by an Art Deco-like headpiece. A$AP Rocky stood beside her in a custom Chanel by Matthieu Blazy pink wool robe. Rocky affectionately described Rihanna as “shining like a diamond,” and spoke of the unparalleled feeling of being loved by a Black woman. Their appearance followed Rocky’s role as a co-chair in 2025 and Rihanna’s surprise baby bump reveal at that year’s event.
The 2026 Met Gala was a spectacular display of creativity and artistic interpretation, with numerous other musicians also making memorable appearances, including Sam Smith, Janelle Monáe, Doechii, Gracie Abrams, Maluma, Charli xcx, Doja Cat, Katy Perry, Cardi B, Ciara, Jon Batiste, and many more. The event underscored its theme, allowing celebrities and designers alike to explore the boundless connections between fashion and art, resulting in a night filled with unforgettable looks and performances.
