The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has warned that three local government areas of the state have a higher risk of flooding during the rainy season, urging residents to call for help during emergency situations.

According to NEMA, the local governments include Ado-Ekiti, Ikere -Ekiti and Ido-Osi, adding that other local councils are not totally free from flooding.

However, to mitigate the effect of the flood disaster in Ekiti, the agency embarked on Grassroot Emergency Preparedness and Awareness Drive, to sensitise the residents.

In her address during the opening ceremony of the sensitization program, the Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar stated that flood disasters in recent times have claimed many lives and destroyed properties worth several millions.

Umar, who was represented by the Head of NEMA Ekiti Operations Office, Dr. Kofoworola Soleye, noted that despite ongoing response efforts, many communities remain unaware of basic preparedness measures and response strategies regarding flood disasters.

As part of the lineup of activities, stakeholder advocacy, and engagements were conducted with various relevant stakeholders to advocate for their involvement in the awareness campaigns through their various activities and programs as this will ensure a wider reach to the grassroots.

Markets, schools, and traditional rulers were also urged to get the information to their followers through their various meetings and sermons.
