Lagos to Ban Single-Use Plastics

The Lagos State government has announced plans for a full ban on the usage and distribution of Single Use Plastics (SUPs) starting July 1, 2025. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a courtesy visit by the management of TETRA PAK West Africa Limited.
Wahab explained that the decision to ban SUPs was made due to several factors, including Lagos being a coastal state below sea level with a land mass of only 3,575 square kilometers and housing about 10% of the country’s population. He emphasized that the ban on Styrofoam food packs in 2024 was a strategic move, and the phase-out of all single-use plastics was announced simultaneously. After 18 months, the government believes sufficient time has been given for transition.
Enforcement of the SUPs ban will commence on July 1, 2025, following the Styrofoam food pack ban in 2024. The state officials are actively engaging with the Food and Beverages Recyclers Alliance (FBBRA), reporting a 70% compliance rate. Wahab called for the extended producers to take responsibility and be fair to the state, given the extensive discussions and adjustment periods provided.
The Managing Director of Tetra Park West Africa Limited, Haithem Debbiche, expressed full support for the embargo, considering it a welcome development.
