Bayelsa Queens Wins NWFL Title

Bayelsa Queens have clinched the championship title of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) following a decisive 4-1 victory against Naija Ratels. This Super Six playoff final, held at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, capped off a season finale distinguished by its intense competition. An unprecedented four teams—Bayelsa Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, Edo Queens, and Remo Stars Ladies—entered the final day with a shot at the title, underscoring the league's escalating competitiveness.
The Prosperity Girls showcased a commanding performance, securing their sixth league title in the competition's history. Vera Samuel was a standout performer, scoring a remarkable hat-trick in the 28th, 61st, and 67th minutes. Mega Cynthia contributed a fourth goal in the 47th minute, solidifying Bayelsa's lead. Although Tumininu Adeshina briefly leveled the score for Naija Ratels in the 42nd minute, Bayelsa’s overall quality ultimately determined the match's outcome. In another Super Six match, Rivers Angels defeated the home team, Remo Stars Ladies, with a score of 2-1. Titilayo Aweda scored twice for Rivers Angels in the 27th and 48th minutes, while Aisha Animashaun managed a consolation goal for Remo Stars in the 70th minute. Remo Stars finished fifth due to goal difference, despite tying points with Rivers Angels.
Nasarawa Amazons and Edo Queens concluded their intense five-day contest with a goalless draw. This result secured Nasarawa the runner-up position with nine points, while Edo Queens finished third with eight points. The final Super Six standings positioned Bayelsa Queens at the top with 10 points, followed by Nasarawa Amazons with 9, Edo Queens with 8, Rivers Angels and Remo Stars Ladies each with 7, and Naija Ratels at the bottom with 0 points.
Bayelsa Queens were awarded a ₦10 million grand prize for their victory. Nasarawa Amazons received ₦6 million as the second-place finishers, and Edo Queens were granted ₦4 million for their third-place finish. The remaining teams—Rivers Angels, Remo Stars, and Naija Ratels—each received ₦1.5 million. The trophy presentation was led by Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, the wife of the Ogun State Governor, along with NWFL board members, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, and Daniel Igali, the president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and chairman of Remo Stars, Kunle Soname.
NWFL Chairperson Nkechi Obi lauded the competition as the most fiercely contested Super Six to date, praising Bayelsa Queens for their consistent performance and championship-winning effort throughout the season. Kunle Soname, the president of Remo Stars and host of the tournament, commended the organization and atmosphere of the Super Six, noting it as a significant milestone in the development of women’s football in Nigeria.
