The Chairman of the Southwest Games, Dr Akogun Lanre Alfred, has extended a message of goodwill to athletes and officials from the six Southwestern states, urging them to compete with distinction and uphold the values of unity, discipline, and sportsmanship.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Dr Alfred commended Ogun State for securing the hosting rights and praised the transformation of Abeokuta into a hub of national sporting activity.

“I salute the government and people of Ogun State for rising to the occasion,” he said. “I particularly commend His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his leadership and commitment to youth and sports development.

This festival is already proving to be a showcase of excellence and a testament to the governor’s vision for national unity through sport.”

Dr Alfred, who heads the Southwest Games—a regional body overseeing athletic development in Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States—described the festival as a vital platform for athletes to demonstrate not only competitive prowess but also integrity and resilience.

“Our athletes are not here merely to win medals,” he said. “They represent a region that has long been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s sporting legacy, and they must reflect the values that have sustained that legacy—dedication, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence.”

He highlighted the Southwest’s contributions to Nigerian sports over the decades, citing the emergence of globally recognised athletes, coaches, and administrators from the region.

He called for sustained investment in infrastructure, youth mentorship, and collaborative development among state governments.

“This festival is more than a contest—it is a celebration of national identity and the boundless potential of our young people,” he said. “Let the Southwest lead by example.”

Dr Alfred also reaffirmed the commitment of the Southwest Games Organising Committee to building a sustainable and competitive sporting ecosystem across the region.

He urged governments, private investors, and sports ted by the festival by supporting inter-state partnerships and long-term talent development.
