FIRST LOOK: ‘Blade Runner 2099’ Unleashes Sci-Fi Future with Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer

Prime Video has unveiled the first trailer for "Blade Runner 2099," signaling the highly anticipated return of Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi franchise. This limited series picks up nine years after the critically acclaimed film "Blade Runner 2049" and continues the narrative established by both the original "Blade Runner" and its sequel. "Blade Runner 2049," directed by Denis Villeneuve, saw the return of original star Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard alongside Ryan Gosling’s replicant blade runner, K, expanding the universe first created by Scott.

The new series, "Blade Runner 2099," features an esteemed cast led by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and "Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer. Michelle Yeoh takes on the role of Olwen, a replicant grappling with the finite nature of her existence, while Hunter Schafer portrays Cora, a human actively evading Blade Runners. The trailer showcases Olwen and Cora forming an unlikely alliance amidst the escalating conflict between replicants and humans. A poignant moment in the cinematic reveals Olwen telling Cora, "The old world forever fights to come back. Humans want what was taken from them. But it’s our time now," encapsulating the series' central theme of struggle and generational change.

Beyond its lead stars, the cast includes series regulars Dimitri Abold, known for "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," and Lewis Gribben from "Somewhere Boy." The roster of recurring guest stars features Katelyn Rose Downey from "The Nun II," Daniel Rigby of "Renegade Nell," Johnny Harris seen in "A Gentleman In Moscow," Amy Lennox from "Only Child," Sheila Atim of "The Woman King," and Matthew Needham, who starred in "House of the Dragon."

Production for "Blade Runner 2099" primarily took place in the Czech Republic, utilizing Prague’s Barrandov Studios, with additional filming conducted in Barcelona. Film United facilitated the production efforts in Prague. Behind the scenes, Silka Luisa, recognized for her work on "Shining Girls," serves as both showrunner and executive producer. Ridley Scott, the visionary director of the original "Blade Runner," returns as an executive producer, alongside David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions. Directing the crucial first two episodes is Jonathan van Tulleken, whose previous credits include two episodes of "Shōgun" and "Dope Thief."

"Blade Runner 2099" is slated to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on November 25, promising to deliver a compelling new chapter in the enduring "Blade Runner" saga.
