Nium, a global leader in cross-border payments, and Relay, a digital banking platform for small businesses, have announced a significant milestone in their year-long partnership: the processing of over $500 million in cross-border payments. This achievement was unveiled at Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas on October 19, 2026, highlighting the growing demand for streamlined international financial operations among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The collaboration leverages Nium’s robust infrastructure to support more than 500 Relay customers, predominantly SMEs, enabling them to collect, convert, send, and spend funds internationally across 153 countries. By embedding Nium’s licensed payment rails, Relay provides broad geographic coverage without incurring the extensive regulatory overhead of obtaining money-transmission licenses across numerous jurisdictions itself. Nium boasts a formidable regulatory footprint, holding licenses in over 40 countries and operating a payout network in more than 190 markets, with over 100 settling in real time. It is also a principal member of major card schemes including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and UATP, solidifying its position as a reliable infrastructure provider.

Anupam Pahuja, Chief Business Officer at Nium, emphasized the critical need for certainty in business banking and payments, stating, “Relay is giving its customers that certainty across 153 countries, and we are built to support it at every step.” Yoseph West, CEO and co-founder at Relay, underscored the importance of a technology partner that could match Relay’s pace through modern APIs and close collaboration. Both companies anticipate expanding the partnership further in response to increasing customer demand.

The SME cross-border payments segment is a highly competitive arena within the paytech landscape, with established players like Wise Business, Airwallex, and Payoneer vying for the same customer profile—small businesses managing payments to overseas suppliers, freelancers, and contractors. Differentiation in this market increasingly hinges on three key factors: the depth of local payout networks, the speed of onboarding processes, and the transparency of FX pricing at the point of payment initiation.

While the $500 million figure represents the cumulative volume processed during the partnership’s inaugural year, specific details regarding average transaction size, take rate, or revenue contribution to either party were not disclosed. For Nium, co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, this partnership aligns with its broader strategy of powering embedded cross-border payments for fintechs and neobanks, rather than directly competing at the merchant or SME level.

The regulatory environment also plays a crucial role, particularly in the United States, where state-level money-transmission licensing presents a structural barrier for smaller cross-border providers. This context reinforces the commercial logic of banking-as-a-service models, where a single licensed infrastructure layer like Nium can service multiple front-end products. It is important to note that Relay itself is not an FDIC-insured bank; its banking services are provided by Thread Bank, a licensed depository institution. This layered compliance architecture is typical among US fintech platforms, ensuring robust regulatory adherence even for seemingly straightforward SME banking products.

Looking ahead, key milestones for the Nium-Relay partnership will include potential expansion to cover Relay Capital products, which are currently listed separately, and whether their geographic scope will extend beyond the existing 153-country footprint, indicating continued growth and strategic development in the cross-border payments sector.
