Fela Kuti's Son Ignites Fury with 'Racist Country' Slam Amid Vinicius Jr Controversy
A recent UEFA Champions League play-off clash between Benfica and Real Madrid was overshadowed by a serious racism controversy involving Vinicius Junior and Gianluca Prestianni, reigniting debate about discrimination in football.
The incident occurred after Vinicius scored the decisive goal at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, curling a brilliant strike into the top corner past goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin in the 50th minute. He celebrated with a dance in front of the home supporters, drawing loud boos.
Referee François Letexier showed him a yellow card for excessive celebration, a decision Vinicius strongly protested.
As play was about to restart, Prestianni was seen covering his mouth and allegedly directing the word “mono” — meaning monkey — at Vinicius.
The Brazilian Winger immediately reported the remark to the referee. Play was halted for about ten minutes, and Vinicius briefly walked toward the dugout to cool off.
Tensions flared again when Kylian Mbappeconfronted Prestianni, reportedly calling out the alleged racist remark. UEFA has since opened an investigation.
The episode triggered strong reactions beyond football.
Nigerian Afrobeat Artist Seun Kuti, son of Fela Kuti, condemned not just the alleged abuse but what he described as a broader culture of silence around racism in Europe.
Speaking on Instagram, Kuti argued that racism is not isolated to one country or club, insisting it is deeply embedded in parts of European society.
He criticized what he sees as selective outrage, saying some only react when directly affected.
Kuti also took aim at Jose Mourinho, who had suggested that Vinicius’ celebration provoked the crowd. Kuti interpreted those comments as shifting blame onto the victim.
He further referenced remarks attributed to Jim Ratcliffe, Minority Owner of Manchester United, about immigration in the UK, arguing that such rhetoric contributes to a wider climate that normalizes prejudice.
Several football figures, including Mbappé and former players turned pundits, publicly condemned racism and expressed support for Vinicius.
The incident has once again highlighted the recurring challenges Black players face across European football and the ongoing demand for stronger institutional action rather than symbolic gestures.
