Explosive Michael Biopic: $15M Reshoots, Child Abuse Claims Erased, Sequels Teased!

The highly anticipated film “Michael,” chronicling the life and rise to superstardom of Michael Jackson, faced significant production overhauls and delays, ultimately shifting its narrative focus from controversial aspects of the singer's life. Originally, the movie's script was set to open in medias res with one of Jackson’s darkest chapters: the 1993 child molestation accusations. A scene depicted the King of Pop staring at his reflection as police lights flashed, with investigators arriving at Neverland Ranch. However, this sequence and much of the third act, which was to be devoted to the scandal, were removed from the final cut.
The drastic changes stemmed from a late-stage discovery by attorneys for the Jackson estate, which served as a producer on the film. They realized a clause in a settlement with one of Jackson’s accusers, Jordan Chandler, explicitly barred the depiction or mention of him in any movie. This forced filmmakers to rework the ending, a process further complicated when screenwriter John Logan’s house was damaged in the Palisades fire. Consequently, the release date, initially set for April 18, 2025, was pushed to October 3, and then finally to spring 2026.
These revisions led to additional photography, with the cast reassembling for 22 days in Los Angeles last June to shoot the new third act and expand earlier scenes. This phase of production, unlike the primary filming in Santa Barbara, did not qualify for state tax rebates, adding an estimated $10 million to $15 million to the film's $155 million budget. The Jackson estate covered these additional costs, as their error necessitated the changes, securing an equity stake in the film as a result.
The reimagined narrative will now conclude with Michael Jackson at the zenith of his career, specifically during his iconic “Bad” tour, depicting him preparing for an electrifying performance. The film is described as leaning heavily into Jackson’s music, presenting a series of showstoppers, and moving away from his more unusual personal behaviors, though it does include a tender moment where Jackson buys toys for children in a hospital. The new dramatic tension will focus on his complex relationship with his domineering father, Joe Jackson, who was concerned about his son's solo career overshadowing the Jackson 5.
Moreover, the movie will explore Jackson’s recovery from severe scalp burns sustained during a 1984 Pepsi commercial accident, including his subsequent abuse of painkillers during that period. Michael Jackson will be portrayed by his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson, while Colman Domingo takes on the role of Joe Jackson. Notably, Janet Jackson, the singer’s famous sister, is not a character in the film. The production also saw consultation from Jackson’s attorney John Branca and estate archivist Karen Langford, with his son Prince serving as an executive producer and maintaining a daily presence on set, while his other children, Bigi and Paris, were not involved.
Despite Jackson’s enduring popularity, his estate acknowledges the controversy surrounding the child abuse allegations, which Jackson always denied. However, they were encouraged by the global success of the Broadway jukebox musical “MJ,” which opened in 2022 and embarked on a national tour in 2023. This show, which deliberately ends before the 1993 allegations, demonstrated public willingness to embrace a sympathetic portrayal of Jackson, grossing over $300 million at the Broadway box office. The estate also drew confidence from the popularity of the Cirque du Soleil show “One” and the 2009 concert film “This Is It.”
Producer Graham King, who has been developing the movie for years and interviewed hundreds of people who knew Jackson, expressed hopes of expanding “Michael” into a two-part story, given the original cut was over three and a half hours. Lionsgate and Universal (handling international distribution) believe there's sufficient material for at least one more film, suggesting that approximately 30% of the jettisoned content could be repurposed for potential sequels. Future films might explore Jackson’s later albums like “Dangerous” and “Invincible,” the acquisition and construction of Neverland Ranch, and his love of animals, though it remains unclear how they would address the later legal battles and abuse allegations.
Early tracking data indicates a strong domestic box office opening for “Michael,” potentially exceeding $55 million, surpassing the $51 million opening of 2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” While direct comparisons are difficult due to “Bohemian Rhapsody”’s pre-pandemic release and massive $910 million worldwide gross, the studio internally projects “Michael” to achieve at least $700 million globally. Should the film reach these financial heights, it could pave the way for more cinematic explorations of Michael Jackson's legacy, ideally without the production complexities encountered in its initial stages.
