Exclusive Glimpse: Inside the High-Stakes Race for MotorTrend's 2026 Truck of the Year

The 2026 MotorTrend Truck of the Year (TOTY) competition featured an all-American field in which electric vehicles (EVs), diesels, and trucks of all sizes competed for the industry’s most prestigious award. Each year, MotorTrend conducts an extensive, multi-stage evaluation process spanning thousands of miles to determine which pickup truck meaningfully advances the segment. For 2026, six distinct nameplates, representing nine total contenders, took part in the program.
Eligibility for the TOTY award remained straightforward: a truck must be either all-new or significantly revised. Rather than comparing contenders directly against one another, MotorTrend evaluates each truck and qualifying van against its six core criteria: value, safety, efficiency, performance of intended function, design advancement, and engineering excellence. Testing begins at a professional proving ground, where each vehicle undergoes instrumented assessments. These are followed by more than a week of real-world testing, including towing, payload hauling, freeway driving, dirt-road running, and rigorous off-roading. Unlike the Car and SUV of the Year programs, TOTY has no intermediate shortlist; every contender endures the entire battery of tests. Once all data is collected and finalists are thoroughly debated, judges vote—and the highest-scoring vehicle is crowned the 2026 MotorTrend Truck of the Year.
MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year program—often called TOTY internally—is traditionally the final and most relaxed of the “Of the Year” tests, featuring fewer vehicles and a more streamlined schedule. This slower pace allows for more unconventional and exploratory testing methods. Two years ago, the competition moved to the Detroit area after discovering that Michigan’s autumn weather is more consistently favorable than California’s. The relocation proved strategic: while this year’s Car and SUV of the Year programs in California were disrupted by torrential rain and mudslides, TOTY testing benefited from clear skies, dry roads, and mild temperatures throughout.
One standout feature of this year’s competition was its entirely domestic lineup, marking the first all-domestic TOTY in recent memory. General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis submitted trucks across a wide range of sizes and powertrains, including subcompact pickups and full-size workhorses powered by gasoline, diesel, electric, and hybrid systems. This resulted in an unprecedented level of diversity across just six nameplates. Initial testing involved paved and dirt-road drives, both with empty beds and with trailers and loaded cargo. Payload simulations were achieved using giant rubberized horse-stall mats, each weighing about 100 pounds, allowing testers to calculate and apply highly accurate payloads.
A particularly interesting discovery emerged regarding payload handling. In previous years, staff manually moved the heavy mats—a laborious and strenuous process. However, a few years ago, it became clear that a mechanical lifting solution would be far more efficient. While a certified forklift operator was available at the time, this year, an electric pallet stacker was introduced, dramatically improving efficiency and safety during payload loading. This upgrade streamlined operations and reduced physical strain for the team, enabling faster, more consistent load tests across all competitors.
