Ex-President Lungu's Remains: Legal Battle Brews for Return to South Africa

The final resting place for the remains of late President Edgar Lungu has become the subject of significant legal and public controversy. Recent court documents, made public by Zambia Monitor, reveal a crucial development in this dispute: an order for the body to be returned to the custody of Two Mountains Burial Services Ltd, where it had previously been resting, or to an alternative mortuary designated by the Lungu family.
This judicial directive, issued by a court in South Africa, directly challenges the Zambian government's attempts to take possession of the former president's corpse. The Lungu family spokesperson, Makebi Zulu, had earlier confirmed this development to Zambia Monitor, informing the public that the South African court's order effectively stalled the Zambian government's intended actions.
The unfolding situation is described as "stewed in fresh controversy," indicating the ongoing and highly contentious nature of the disagreement over the handling of President Lungu's remains. This legal intervention underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the post-mortem arrangements for public figures, particularly when governmental and family interests diverge.
